Obama Pushes Into Afghanistan, Pakistan But He Controls Few Variables

March 27, 2009

The success of President Barack Obama’s new war strategy depends heavily on factors beyond his control: Afghan competence, Pakistani cooperation and a greater willingness by Europeans and other allies to adopt the American view that al-Qaida is at the core of the conflict.

Each of those has been missing or, at best, has fallen short despite years of U.S. pushing and prodding.

ROBERT BURNS, Associated Press Writer

That is why, after more than seven years of inconclusive combat, hundreds of American deaths, billions in financial aid and incomplete efforts to build self-sustaining Afghan security forces, Obama saw a need Friday to retool strategy, clarify U.S. war aims and seek more help from NATO and other partners.

Obama’s Views Cause Troubles Between Notre Dame, Bishop, Many Catholics

March 25, 2009

President Barack Obama has accepted an invitation to give an address at the University of Notre Dame commencement in May.

But his pro-abortion and pro-embryonic stem cell research views have gotten a reactions from some 80,000 to 100,000 Catholics who are protesting in the form of an on line petition.

Lifting a federal ban on embryonic stem cell research, he said just last night at a news conference, was the “right thing to do” despite criticisms from various quarters.

A White House statement released Tuesday said the president welcomes the “spirit of debate and healthy disagreement on important issues” sparked in the Notre dame community.

But the discussion has spilled over everywhere, with reports in newspapers in London and Rome.

“While he is honored to have the support of millions of people of all faiths, including Catholics with their rich tradition of recognizing the dignity of people, he does not govern with the expectation that everyone sees eye to eye with him on every position,” the White House statement said.

The Catholic Bishop in Notre Dame’s area said he will not attend.

Financial Advice, Recovery, Trumped by Obama, Congress, Media, Polls

March 21, 2009

Last week when news came that AIG was paying huge bonuses to employees even after the federal bailout, the president’s two top financial advisors knew what to tell the president.

“Pay the bonuses.  We can’t void a contract.”

That advice came from Larry Summers and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner: Obama’s top economic advisors.

“Summers is the head dog.  He’s Geithner’s mentor.  Geithner is the protoge.  I don’t know how Obama fires one and keeps the other,” a top man in New York financial circles told us.

So maybe that is why Obama has not yet fired Geithner.

Obama Talks Too Much: Time For Action
(Time to Fire Geithner and Summers Too?)

US President Barack Obama, seen here on January 29, 2009, sits ...
US President Barack Obama, seen here on January 29, 2009, sits alongside Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.  Obama has to get his face out of the same photo with Geithner’s face….

And maybe that is why the stimulus contained a provision to allow the AIG bonuses: Geithner and Summers made sure it was put in.

Dodd would know but hasn’t named names.

Heck: Dodd has a house in Ireland to make his retirement happy and secure.

With the nation in what the president has called a financial “crisis” and even a “catastrophe,” Obama is moving away from his top financial advisors at least on some issues, and sticking close to the advice of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and policy advisor David Axelrod.

“Those guys know politics.  They are listening to the Hill and watching the media and the polls.  That’s driving Obama’s policy right now,” a top political analyst told us.

Last year, while still a senator, Obama voted for the bailout for AIG….

Meanwhile, Ben Bernanke is taking heat from media folks.

Bernanke released  more money into the nation’s money supply this week and the price of gold went up while the value of the dollar dropped…..

Dodd under fire in his home state:

Dodd’s decision to move his family to Iowa to campaign for a doomed bid for president, his initial refusal to release documents of his two controversial mortgages with Countrywide, criticism of how he financed a vacation cottage in Ireland, and now his involvement as Senate Banking Committee chairman in the bill that ultimately protected bonuses for executives at insurance giant AIG have all taken their toll.

Iran Blows Off Obama “Outreach Video” in White House Video Hell Week

March 20, 2009

President Obama is in video hell today.  His top videos are being panned and laughed at.

Americans are giggling that the president made fun of the Special Olympics while a guest on Jay Leno.

He should leave the comedy to Leno.

The Duke basketball coach said Obama should go to work on the economy and stay off ESPN.

And in Iran the Obama video offering outreach may never even get to the screen….

**********************

From Fox News

Iran’s supreme leader said Friday that world powers had been persuaded they could not block Iran’s nuclear progress — making no mention of a new-year’s message sent by President Obama to his country, Reuters reported.

Neither Ayatollah Ali Khamenei nor Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad noted Obama’s attempt to make a “new beginning” with their country in recorded messages they issued to mark the Iranian New Year.

Obama released the video Friday to coincide with the Iranian festival of Nowruz, which marks the arrival of spring. In the video, Obama says the U.S. is prepared to end the strained relations if Tehran tones down its combative rhetoric.

“This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect,” Obama said.

A press adviser to Iran’s president downplayed the video, saying “minor changes will not end the differences.”

Ali Akbar Javanfekr told the Iranian state-run English-language Press TV satellite station that Iran will never forget U.S. meddling in Tehran’s affairs. The two countries broke off relations after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

**********************

“Obama has talked of change but has taken no practical measures to address America’s past mistakes in Iran. If Mr. Obama takes concrete actions and makes fundamental changes in U.S. foreign policy toward other nations including Iran, the Iranian government and people will not turn their back on him,” Ali Akbar Javanfekr told the Iranian state-run English-language Press TV satellite station.

It wasn’t clear how many Iranians were able to see the video, which was not aired on state television in Iran on Friday. It was likely shown on Farsi-language TV stations beamed in from outside of the country, but many Iranians don’t watch television in the first days of long Nowruz holiday that is normally filled with family gatherings or vacations away from home.

Iranians could see the video on the White House Web site, but other popular video sharing sites like YouTube are blocked in Iran.

Duke Coach Slam Dunks Obama: Go Fix the Economy

March 19, 2009

The Messiah spoke out in an effort to tell the barons of college football how to have a playoff system even before he was president.

“If you’ve got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses, there’s no clear decisive winner. We should be creating a playoff system,” he told CBS’ Steve Kroft on “60 Minutes” last November 15 (2008).

Now  he seems to be exhibiting a propensity for telling everyone how to run their “business” — like Wall Street big guns and others.  He signed a bill (the stimulus) that protected the same AIG bonues he called “an outrage” and now will probably sign a bill imposing confiscatory taxation on those same bonuses.

So Barack Obama is unafraid to take any position on just about anything.

And he has gone into sports management yet again; offending some very good young men, their coach and fans, needlessly.

Does he think he’s always right and we must know?  After all, “I won.”

We don’t have to believe….

Duke Coach Slam Dunks Obama

From Fox News and the Associated Press

Barack Obama picked North Carolina to defeat Louisville for the NCAA championship, a relatively safe selection for a trailblazing president.

Obama spent part of Tuesday making his tournament picks for ESPN, which posted his completed bracket online Wednesday and showed the First Fan filling it out with Andy Katz on the noon edition of “Sportscenter.”

Of course, the president’s choice drew a reaction from the Tar Heels’ most intense rival.

“Somebody said that we’re not in President Obama’s Final Four, and as much as I respect what he’s doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said from the Blue Devils’ first-round site in Greensboro, N.C.

The president had top-seeded Pittsburgh join the No. 1-seeded Tar Heels and Cardinals in the Final Four, but chose second-seeded Memphis to beat Connecticut in the West Regional.

“I think Memphis has got a very athletic team,” Obama told Katz, an ESPN college basketball analyst. “I think they’ve got a good shot.”

March 19, 2009

“Washington is all in a tizzy and everybody is pointing fingers at each other and saying it’s their fault, the Democrats’ fault, the Republicans’ fault,” he said at a town hall meeting Wednesday. “Listen, I’ll take responsibility. I’m the President.”

He also make clear that it isn’t really his fault. “We didn’t grant these contracts,” he said.

But he added: “So for everybody in Washington who’s busy scrambling, trying to figure out how to blame somebody else, just go ahead and talk to me, because it’s my job to make sure that we fix these messes, even if I don’t make them.”

The comments were an effort to change the subject, which has engulfed Washington this week, and pivot to his push to overhaul financial regulations that govern the system and that many blame for the underlying problems.

“We’ve got to make sure that we’ve got regulations that don’t allow companies to take these huge risks that are so big that they can sort of hold us hostage,” he said.

“Dodd The Dodge” — Senator Weasels Away The Truth; And Not Artfully

March 18, 2009

Senator Chris  Dodd was quoted by several news sources including Jim Engle of Fox News Channel today as saying he did not write the specific language in the “stimulus” bill that protected the AIG bonuses.

He said the language he wrote was changed by somebody somewhere, perhaps in the conference committee.

But in a web posting in CNN’s political ticker this afternoon, CNN said Dodd told them he did write the AIG bonus language.

He didn’t before he did?

“Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd told CNN’s Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer Wednesday that he was responsible for adding the bonus loophole into the stimulus package that permitted AIG and other companies that received bailout funds to pay bonuses. Officials with the Obama administration pushed to make sure contracts for bonuses at companies receiving federal bailout money stayed in place, a Treasury Department official told CNN.”

“The clause in effect created the loophole that officials at AIG say is requiring them to pay millions of dollars in bonuses after receiving funds. On Tuesday, Dodd denied to CNN that he had anything to do with the adding of that provision. ”

Dodd is a snake and should be punished….

But he also seems to indicate that White House staffers suggested the language that allowed the AIG bonuses….Or Treasury (Geithner) and perhaps Larry Summers….

Did Obama White House Fuel AIG Bonus Mess To Enact Tougher Rules With Public Support, “Outrage”?
(You bet they did)

The stimulus was a rush job caused by a president that proclaimed a national crisis.  The Congress needs to start doing  a much better job — and not allow the procss to be short circuited again…..  This group is disgraceful…

The president railroaded a willing Democratic congress on the stimulus.

The push to get the bill through was so frantic members of Congress didn’t have a chance to read all 1,071 pages of the document before they could vote.

Don’t forget what a Texas Republican said about the stimulus:

Why The Rush, Really?

“The longer a piece of garbage lays out in the sun the worse it stinks,” said Republican Representative John Culberson (R-TX), refeering to the Obama stimulus.  “That’s why the bill was hidden and  kept off the Internet.”

“This is a crime of deceit put upon the American people,” he said.

“This bill was intentionally hidden from lawmakers and the public.”

“This is one of the largest outrages ever committed,” said.

“Nobody read this bill before it was passed,” he said.

The ticker entry at CNN is marked 6:03 PM March 18:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

Shame on Dodd but more importantly shame on President Obama and all the Democrats in congress for running the stimulus through the legislative process with no committee hearings and too little thought.  Every single time we’ve seen such rushed legislation we wind up with very bad law.

For Obama and Democrats to act “outraged” not at the AIG bonuses is pure theater and is no accident: Obama is using the AIG Bonus dust up as an excuse to overhaul rules for all companies accepting “bailout mone” and that smakes of a communist or socialist takeover of our capitalism entirely….

From February 14:

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank says he sees a “happy ending” to the nation’s economic woes within several years, has “a lot of confidence” in the Obama administration economic team, and argues that most of the money being spent to revive US banks “is going to be repaid.”

Government policy will change as a result of the nation going through tough economic times, Frank said. There will be “a renewed appreciation for the importance of the government setting rules,” he said. “You will get a new, systemic-risk regulatory regime.”

Despite the market’s reaction, “I have a lot of confidence in Geithner and [Lawrence] Summers,” who heads Obama’s National Economic Council, Frank said.

Government doesn’t get more distasteful…

On February 13:

Today I voted against the largest spending bill in the history of the United States Congress. This bill violated House rules, was crafted in secret by unelected Democrat staff, and gave the American people only 15 hours to read nearly 1,500 pages. All so Speaker Pelosi could make her trip to Italy.

This bill is also full of pet projects and wasteful spending. How does $300 million for golf carts help stimulate the economy? Economists from around the country have said this bill will do nothing to stimulate the economy and it’s easy to see why.

In just 18 legislative days, this Congress has spent over $1.1 trillion dollars and vastly expanded the federal government. For the rest of the 111th Congress, I will continue fighting to protect the American economy and your hard earned tax dollars from the free-spending Democrat majority.

Expect Obama To Trash Bipartisan Pledge and Railroad His Budget Through Congress “Rubber Stamp”

March 18, 2009

Even with a huge majority of Democrats in the House and an ample edge in the Senate, Barack Obama is expected to take no chances on anything stopping his spending train.

The legislative and deliberation shortcut is called “budget reconciliation”…..

By using this trick,Obama can be assured he’ll get his hands on a lot more money than he might if he went through normal congressional procedure….

President Obama urged more speed just yesterday for his next budget: a $3.6 trillion beheamouth.  “Budget reconciliation” would allow him to get exactly what he wants.  So watch this develop: AIG is a distraction.  The AIG bonuses ate less than 0.1 % of the AIG bailout…..

That doesn’t include all the health care money Obama wants by a long shot:
Health care overhaul may cost another $1.5 trillion or more

Obama’s budget doesn’t yet fully address the climate change measures he wants: Cha-ching:
Obama climate plan could cost $2 trillion

The stimulus — which no “lawmaker” has admitted to reading before it was passed, was a lesson in why we need congress to deliberate and not rubber stamp spending bills.

But the president naturally wants more spending, less deliberation and more rubber stamping — which will get him his goals and reelection….

Obama’s Real Problem: He Still Wants Toxic Acid Bank Bailout $750B, Budget of $3.6 Trillion, and More

*********************

By Lori Montgomery
The Washington Post

Senior members of the Obama administration are pressing lawmakers to use a shortcut to drive the president’s signature initiatives on health care and energy through Congress without Republican votes, a move that many lawmakers say would fly in the face of President Obama’s pledge to restore bipartisanship to Washington.

Republicans are howling about the proposal to expand health coverage and tax greenhouse gas emissions without their input, warning that it could irrevocably damage relations with the new president.

“That would be the Chicago approach to governing: Strong-arm it through,” said  Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), who briefly considered joining the Obama administration as commerce secretary. “You’re talking about the exact opposite of bipartisan. You’re talking about running over the minority, putting them in cement and throwing them in the Chicago River.”

The shortcut, known as “budget reconciliation,” would allow Obama’s health and energy proposals to be rolled into a bill that cannot be filibustered, meaning Democrats could push it through the Senate with 51 votes, instead of the usual 60. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton both used the tactic to win deficit-reduction packages, while George W. Bush used it to push through his signature tax cuts.

Administration officials say they have not made a final decision about whether to use the maneuver. But White House budget director Peter R. Orszag said yesterday that it is “premature to be taking it off the table.” Meanwhile, key administration officials, including White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, are pushing for reconciliation instructions in the budget proposal that Democrats are scheduled to unveil next week, congressional sources said.

Health care overhaul may cost another $1.5 trillion or more

March 17, 2009

THIS JUST IN:

“Guaranteeing health insurance for all Americans may cost about $1.5 trillion over the next decade, health experts say. That’s more than double the $634 billion ‘down payment’ President Barack Obama set aside for health reform in his budget, raising the prospect of sticker shock at a time of record federal spending.”

While most of America’s mainstream media was worried about, what, $160 million in bonus money AIG paid out, the real issue always was and still is, how can we do everything in President Obama’s budget when we still haven’t stopped the economic bleeding.

The fabrication that we  are in such a financial crisis that we absolutely MUST now spend heaps of money bailing out everyone, including other nations, and we absolutely must solve all the problems of health care, energy, education and global warming is crazy.  Nuts.

We are charging to our national credit card with no end in sight  — and we don’t know for sure what we are buying, what it will cost and what else could go wrong like a new terrorist attack like 9-11, another war, and so on.  And we don’t know if all this printing money and insanity will cause inflation that will make the dollar worthless.

That’s what China was worried about last week when Premier Wen Jaibao said he was concerned about american spending and borrowing.

We are in an economic crisis and we do not yet know how much we’ll have to spend to end it: that is a real problem.  Until we stop thinking about a second stimulus and more bailouts we have no idea how much debt we’ll have and if anyone will buy our T-bills.

We haven’t even solved the banks with toxic assets problem yet.

The AIG bonus flap is about 1/2 of 1% of the AIG bailout of some $173 billion.

As Joe Biden likes to say: “Gimme a f*&$#ing break.”

What is an outrage here is that President Obama has not yet apologized to the American people for the ineptitude of his economic team.

he needs to fire geithner and scale back his spending dreams.  He already has too much of my money — and my grandchildrens’.

Obama: Playing not to lose

March 12, 2009

President Obama is not playing to win.  He’s playing not to lose.  After 50 days in office he is trying to run out the clock: with 1,410 days to go.

He’s playing not to lose the next election.

A president playing to win would have started on the economy on day one: and would never have delivered the inauguration address Barack Obama did.  A president playing to win would have declared war on the economy by now, fired Tim Geithner by now, and delivered a plan based-upon a well thought out national mission we could all hold on to.  The way the nation is going is more like Alice in Wonderland than the economic “catastrophe” we face in reality.

And the thought that we can still start spending on a host of new initiatives including universal health care, education, energy and climate change reminds me of the Yellow Brick Road.

Barack is behind the curtain: where he signed the shameful omnibus pork bill yesterday instead of declaring a veto as part of his “new boss in town” approach.  Instead our approach is: we can have it all.

Well: first get some jobs and houses back, Barack.  And you’ll need to fix the banks to do that.

Stop playing not to lose.  Playing not to lose is great for lawyers, professors and community organizers.  But we are no longer in a law firm, a class room or in Reverend Wright’s church.

ACORN and “God Damn America” won’t work here: and if you think it will good luck.  But remember: you’re gambling with my money, my childrens’ money, my grandchildrens’ money and China’s money.

The casino Barack Obama is spending our money in is the world and China, which holds much of the U.S. debt, and China could break his legs…..

President Obama says we need a total rebuilding of American health care, education and energy: but we’ll just push reset with the rest of the world….It just seems like a sophomoric and socialistic thought process that can’t work.  The Soviet Union spent itself to death trying to keep up with U.S. military advances.  Now China and Russia will just watch as America spends itself to death with $1 billion dollars an hour of borrowed (much from China) money….

We cannot fix everything until we fix one thing: the economy.

Hey Obama: You had me at “hello.”

My expectations for Barack Obama starting on this Inauguration Day could not be higher.

He’s a gifted public orator with a huge election win under his belt and “political capital” like few ever before him.  As the throng on the mall this morning shows, people from all over America love this man and expect greatness from him.

He has to deliver.

He has to change the nation’s course and perhaps that of the world.

I want to hear his real vision.  Not rhetoric.  I want to hear a master plan from a Harvard educated black man that has risen as high as any American can go.

I want to hear “We Americans are no longer the land of pork barrel spending, party divisions, racial strife and discord.  We will meet any challenge, climb any mountain….”

Now:

We can have it all got us into this economic mess, which Barack Obama chased after to solve.  The presidency was not “inherited.” And with this economy it seems we can not have it all….
