Pope says humanity needs 'saving' from homosexuality

Pope Benedict XVI sparked a furious reaction from other Christian groups as he also suggested that a blurring of the distinction between male and female could lead to the “self-destruction” of the human race.

The pontiff was delivering his end-of-year address to senior Vatican staff and his words were later released to the media.

The Roman Catholic Church teaches that, while homosexuality is not sinful, homosexual acts are.

It opposes gay marriage and, in October, one leading Vatican official described homosexuality as “a deviation, an irregularity, a wound”.

In his address to the Curia, the Vatican’s central administration, the Pope himself described behaviour beyond traditional heterosexual relations as “a destruction of God’s work”.

He said the Roman Catholic Church had a duty to “protect man from the destruction of himself” and urged respect for the “nature of the human being as man and woman.”

The pontiff added: “The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less.”

His remarks were immediately denounced as “totally irresponsible and unacceptable in any shape or form” by the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement.

Its chief executive, the Rev Sharon Ferguson, said: “It is more the case that we need to be saved from his comments. It is comments like this that justify homophobic bullying that goes on in schools and it is comments like this that justify gay bashing.

“There are still so many instances of people being killed around the world, including in western society, purely and simply because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity.

“When you have religious leaders like that making that sort of statement then followers feel they are justified in behaving in an aggressive and violent way because they feel that they are doing God’s work in ridding the world of these people.”

The Rev Dr Giles Fraser, Vicar of Putney and president of Inclusive Church, the pro-gay Anglican movement, said: “I thought the Christmas angels said ‘Fear not’.

“Instead, the Pope is spreading fear that gay people somehow threaten the planet. And that’s just absurd.

“As always, this sort of religious homophobia will be an alibi for all those who would do gay people harm. Can’t he think of something better to say at Christmas?”

god! i hope he hears himself and see how hateful his words are, and to think we’ve gone all this way to advance homosexual rights… it saddens me to hear such words from an educated man

My biggest question is who elected these people to “The Church has as much responsibility to preserve what it sees as man and woman’s God-given roles as it does to protect endangered species, he implied.”
I don’t remember telling these people that I need their help or that I want them to tell me how to live my life. The CHURCH was created for 2 reasons only, wealth and power. Personally the Pope is a nobody, he does not speak for me, and frankly he needs to be draged kicking and screaming out of the middle ages.
WW3 is coming it will be about God, Muslim’s want to rule as God tells them. The rest ofthe religous community will not give up their power. Frankly both are intolerent, stuck-up, and backwards.

Nice Holiday message of HATE. Thanks again Pope for your kind words, you are always so full of hope and love…NOT.

This World has come a long way as well as It’s going also ! Howhever we can’t remake history nor destroy it neither. What ever human being does will come to pass.
So, let’s stop going astray… and dream for a new World without sex … !

    In God I Trust !
It’s the reason why American $ is always green, and so shall it be forever !
At the end, sex brings emptyness. Let’s trust in God, we have nothing to loose.

The Pope needs to come out of the Vatican and do some good. He needs to sell all the worldly things and get back to helping people. The world needs saving and the Pope has become a stupid and disconnected man, much like the last Tsar of Russia. Preaching hate is bad. I doubt that all the gays in the world could bring down society. Have you ever seen a run down old neighborhood, the gays move in and property values climb, crime goes recedes.

The Pope needs to clean his house of pedophiles and get on with helping mankind. Gays are not pedophiles. And it is ashame that so many repressed men became priest and abused children. If priest were allowed to marry or deal with their true sexuality maybe they would not take out their frustrations on children.

In closing: Pope – shut up and do some real good. Your words are empty and out of touch!

Rather than bash on the Pope I just want to say that his words were obviously careless and I find them offensive.

The big bad thing that sucks about this is it gives all the evangelical gay-bashers out there some kind of reference to draw on.

I wrote some long & wordy blog about Lou Engle who is bashing gays harder than the Pope ever did.

Careless, I think not. Pope has a massive staff. I figure misinterpreted by the media. For the Pope this is a Bible/sin/morality issue. For the EU, for example, it is an issue of fairness to all people, which the Pope too would support. Maybe this is a tempest in a teapot. Pope doesn’t hate gays. But he does say gay conduct is sinful as the bible says….
