The Great Give Away of Taxpayer Money By Bigger and Bigger Government

March 26, 2009

An eager 20 year old student asked me yesterday, “Uncle, who really pays for all this spending?”

“Well, your children and grandchildren, Dear,  I thought you knew,” I said.

This needs time to think in and sink in — since she hasn’t yet started a family….

This is a developing essay that is not yet complete….

So we’ve been wondering about all this Obama spending: what it is and what it means.

The president basically spent $1 billion per day in his first 50 days.

I wonder why we need paid “volunteers” so badly that we now have to pay for them?

“You cannot carry on for ever squeezing the productive bit of the economy in order to fund an unprecedented engorgement of the unproductive bit. You cannot spend your way out of recession or borrow your way out of debt.”  This rings true for Americans even though it wan an admonishment to Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

I wonder if the crisis in Mexico will mean a huge migration of Mexicans into the states…I mean way huger than ALREADY…and what will that cost?
Mexico: “under sustained assault”; Could “collapse” — U.S. Military

“Worst-case scenario, Mexico becomes the Western hemisphere’s equivalent of Somalia, with mass violence, mass chaos,” said Ted Galen Carpenter, vice president for defense and foreign policy at the Cato Institute, a Washington-based think tank. “That would clearly require a military response from the United States.”

I wonder why the Pentagon can no longer refer to the “war on terror” and is already trying to figure out how to cut many billions from its budget; while Russia and China rearm?

When we make it much more simple to unionize through programs like card check, how will that impact the economy?  Well, FedEx might scrap plans to buy new jets from Boeing and the stimulus might hire many fewer workers….
Stimulus: Way Fewer Jobs Than You Thought

Just Wednesday FedEx said it might back off on billions of dollars of aircraft sales planned to go to Boeing.  The reason?  Card check.  FedEx is worried that fast unionization of its work force will dramatically change its bottom line.

Who benefits from all this U.S. debt?  Who buys our debt and who gets our interest payment?  The answer in one word is China.  The U.S. bailed out Freddie and Fannie with Taxperer money and now China is even buying the houses we once owned…

I wonder how we will pay for “unknown unknowns” like 9-11 and Katrina?  Well, we’ll print more money…..

There are still issues as yet untackled by Obama like immigration.  How will we deal with the vast numbers of illegals ou there?

I wonder how much our government will grow, what the government will cost us all and what freedoms we’ll lose in this Obama shake up?

There is a mind-set here that Americans can have eveything they want and now and without consequences.

Didn’t that thinking spark this “economic downturn”?

Chinese find opportunity in U.S. real-estate slump

March 26, 2009

Amid a downturn in real-estate prices, some wealthy Chinese are signing up for home-buying tours to the U.S., and Chinese media tout the trend as another sign of the strength of what’s now the world’s third-largest economy behind the U.S. and Japan.

By Tim Johnson, McClatchy Newspapers

“The real estate prices in America have gone down drastically,” said Yin Guohua , a partner in a law firm who recently returned from an 11-day U.S. tour with a group of Chinese elite. “It’s a good option for Chinese people who want to buy for investment.”

In prime time earlier this week, China Central Television’s popular Oriental Horizon program dedicated half an hour to the topic of house-hunting tours to the U.S. The tours also have been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, some of them suggesting that the buying power of newly rich Chinese might help salvage U.S. real estate woes.

“We’ll probably take more than 10 groups this year,” said Vincent Mo , chairman of SouFun Holdings , one of two companies known to be organizing the house-buying trips. “There are more than 500 people applying to go with the SouFun team to look at property in the U.S.”

Did ACORN Organize Protests At Homes of AIG Execs?

March 22, 2009

On Saturday reporter John Christofferson wrote for the Associated Press that protesters had gone to the homes of AIG executives to make their displeasure known on the bonus issue.

One of our readers commented on the article that the reporter should get an “F” for not pointing out who these people were.

“‘Activists’ ? Who are they? Who organized them? Who paid for the bus ? These are not deep investigative questions. He certainly got the names of the executives and towns easily enough. This is selective journalism at its worst.”

Social Unrest: Hurt by Economy, Europeans Vent Their Anger

We pulled the thread on this and found several sources that confirmed that ACORN (the Association of Community Reform Organizations) engineerd these protests.

We also found out that reporters vastly outnumered the ACORN protesters…

Why would a far left organization so closely tied to Barack Obama feel the need to invade the neighborhoods of the AIG executives after the House of Representatives already made it clear they wanted to get back 90% of these guys’ “bonus” money?

While the tea parties, (which are popping up all over the country, drawing hundreds and even thousands of people every week), are attracting scarce attention from the media, a motley troupe of 40 ACORN malcontents that go by the name of the Connecticut Working Families Party attracted dozens of reporters from around the world for their protest of AIG working family homes, today:

I’ve been to three tea parties so far, all of which were considerably larger than this sad little  exercise in class envy. Only the last one was covered by anyone in the MSM; one lone reporter from the local Fox affiliate.

But the AIG bonuses are apparently what the media insists we  be outraged about, not the insane spending spree Obama and the Dems in Congress have been on. I could have worked up a little indignation over the bonuses, myself,  but all of the maudlin emoting that came out of Congress, and the White House over them, knocked it right out of me.

Not so with CT Working Families Party.

Gregg: ‘I’m Too Conservative’ for Obama

February 13, 2009

Republican Sen. Judd Gregg said Friday that he pulled out of the job of commerce secretary after realizing that “I’m just going to be a little too conservative” for President Obama’s administration.

Associated Press

If you’re going to be on a football team, “you’ve got to pull out and block on every play, you can’t do it on every other play,” the senator said.

“I didn’t feel comfortable going forward because of my individuality, for lack of a better term,” Gregg said during an appearance Friday morning on CNBC.

Gregg said he thinks Obama is on the right track in attempts to stabilize the shaky financial system and that the proposal of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner — much criticized as being too vague — is going to be an extremely strong initiative once it is filled out with details.

At the same time, Gregg said his conservative inclinations would show up in terms of fiscal spending.

Regarding the $790 billion economic stimulus plan, “I think there was a tactical error made … in that you allowed the appropriators to write the package,” said Gregg.

He said he thinks the stimulus plan “should be focusing mainly on trying to stabilize the real estate markets, and promoting small business and getting jobs.”

Stimulus: Taxpayers Get Billions; What Do You Get?

February 5, 2009

Sending a kid to college, purchasing a new car, buying a first home or making the one you own more energy efficient. Those are a few of the ways Americans might cut their tax bills under the economic stimulus package Congress is crafting.

By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, Associated Press

The biggest tax breaks target the working poor, especially those with children, but many apply to middle-income and even wealthy taxpayers.

Most workers would see about a $20 a week increase in their take-home pay, starting around June, from a new tax credit. Millions of additional low-income workers who don’t make enough money to pay income taxes would get checks from the government when they file their 2009 tax returns.

The $819 billion economic recovery package approved by the House last week includes about $188 billion in tax breaks for families and individuals over the next two years. The Senate package, which has topped $900 billion, has about $263 billion in tax breaks for families and individuals.

The goal is to get people to spend money at a time when most are cutting back and saving more. It makes sense to be frugal when the economy is in such bad shape, but it hurts the economy when everyone does it.

Here are some ways taxpayers could save money:

Obama: No Single Action Can Cure the Economy

January 31, 2009

President Obama said Saturday his administration will outline a new strategy in the coming days for spending billions of federal dollars to pull the nation out of an economic crisis he described as “devastating.”

Obama and his top advisers are weighing how to structure the remaining $350 billion that Congress approved last year to save financial institutions and lenders from collapse. The new president also warned there is no single action that would allow his administration to fix the struggling U.S. economy, a stark statement at the end of a week that saw hundreds of thousands of Americans lose their jobs.

Associated Press

“No one bill, no matter how comprehensive, can cure what ails our economy,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. “So just as we jump-start job creation, we must also ensure that markets are stable, credit is flowing and families can stay in their homes.”
