I Wonder What Illegal Immigrants Cost?

March 26, 2009

I wonder what the United States spends on illegal immigrants: in health care, food stamps, housing, et al?

I wonder what we spend on border patrol, ICE and the rest?  I wonder what the total of all of America’s criminal courts money, police and prison expenses go to illegal aliens?

I wonder how many American citizens are killed, raped or harmed by illegals every year?

Nancy Pelois might say it is un-American for me to ask these questions and I must be a racist.  But I feel I have the right and duty to ask; as many of my ancestors (all, in fact) were immigrants (legally), my religious advisor and priest is from the Ukraine (legally) and my wife and her family are all here legally from Vietnam….

I wonder what it has cost the taxpayers to have the president’s aunt a ‘guest’ here all these years?

What do I tell my legal immigrant family and friends?

March 25, 2009

I was going to stay out of the immigration debate but we are headlong quickly toward a cliff so here goes.

I have many family members and friends that came to the United States legally and went through the system.

Many waited six, seven or more years to become citizens.  All are legal — many with their own businesses and I don’t know one that has become a burden upon the taxpayers.

Most of these people are Asians: Vietnamese-Americans, Chinese-Americans and Korean-Americans.

My wife came here the hard way: after war and communism and prison in Vietnam she fled by boat: facing death by starvation, pirates, rape and other criminal activity.  Add to that the environment: the sun and the sea.  Four people died in her boat.

She came here and waited, and waited and waited to become a citizen.  She learned English and worked at minimum wage jobs.  She now has her own business and is hanging on by a thread due to the bad economy.

She never complains.

She never even complains when we see hundreds of people — daily — that are here illegally and demanding work and money and benefits.

They aren’t learning English and are not awaiting the system: they are waiting for Nancy Pelosi’s revolution.

They are waiting for the “system’ to adapt to them: and with the Speaker of the House telling them that officers sworn to defend the law are un-American — what should I tell my Vietnamese-American family about America, justice and the rule of law?

ACORN Protesters At Homes of AIG Execs Similar To Lawlessness For UK Bank Exec?

March 25, 2009

Politics is one thing.  But sending people to protest at people’s homes seems an invitation to lawless behavior to many…

When ACORN funded protests at the homes of AIG executives last weekend, most of the mainstream media was silent.  Those that reported on the protests didn’t mention ACORN at all.

And certain congressmen fueled these protests: asking for the names and addresses of AIG workers.

For what purpose?

Paying protesters can only lead to trouble.  Sending protesters to private homes can only make homeowers and neighbors fearful which could mean the police get involved and confrontations occur.

We condemn such conduct: no matter how much we seem to think someone has wronged us; sending protesters to his house is out of bounds and invites trouble….

The Times (UK)

An anti-capitalist vigilante group calling itself Bank Bosses Are Criminals has claimed responsibility for an attack on the home and car of Sir Fred Goodwin, the former chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The ex-banker’s £3 million Edinburgh house was targeted in the early hours, with at least four ground-floor windows smashed and a black Mercedes vandalised. Police were called at around 4.15am to Morningside, a leafy suburb of the Scottish capital lined with substantial, stone-built homes.

A storm of controversy has engulfed Sir Fred over the £16.9 million pension he negotiated as he was made to leave RBS last October for his part in bringing the bank to its knees. The 50-year-old financier has already started to collect an annual pension of around £700,000, and refused invitations to hand it back..

Less than an hour after the attack, an e-mail was sent to local media outlets, signed by Moira McLeod, claiming responsibility and threatening further vigilante assaults. The e-mail account used to send the warning was named “Bank Bosses Are Criminals”.

Pelosi’s Lawlessness

And then we have Nancy Pelosi, the third in line to the presidency, virtually telling illegal immigrants to violate the law: that the law is “Un-American.”

Well, here’s more “anything to win” — changing law by illegal acts and shenanigans.

If Nancy wants to make good law; she is in the catbird seat to do so.  The Speaker of the House knows how to make good law and how to defeat those that stand in her way too….

Pelosi made the stimulus bill and Obama has already offered her the health care revolution.  But she’s not satisfied yet: now she’ll rewrite immigration law by not picking up a pen: she’ll use the microphone.

Obama, Pelosi: Anything to Win

*****************

When I wrote last week’s column, before the AIG fury erupted, I argued that we in Washington should dial back our rhetoric because public passions were already dangerously high — and we have so many hard decisions in probably hard times ahead of us that we need to face as a united people. Little did I expect that within hours of my writing those words, congressmen would be calling for the names and addresses of AIG employees to be made public — even though the congressmen had been told that the lives of the employees’ children had been threatened as a result of the uproar. Congressmen who would risk the lives of innocent children to save their own political skins are not likely to provide noble leadership in the months and years to come.

Obama, Pelosi: Anything to Win

March 19, 2009

Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are all about changing America: and not necessarily the old fashioned way with public debate, wise congressional deliberation, laws and courts.

This is now about anything to win.

President Obama’s “outrage” at AIG paying bonuses is theater of the absurd.  He could care less about $165 million.  He sits atop a several trillion dollar empire in real trouble.  What he wants is to demonize Wall Street, “Big Business” and the leadership of the “old” capitalisim, just as he demonized “big oil.”

By rushing his economic stimulus through congress, and in the confusion making sure bonus money for corporations like AIG was protected, the White House, Treasury and perhaps even the Fed engineered the AIG outrage  in order to overhaul regulations governing American business.

You’ll never convince me otherwise and you’ll never convince me that Chris Dodd or Tim Geithner has the brains or the stones to do this on their own.  Obama and Rahm Emanuel certainly might….

Now the president will go on Jay Leno: the first sitting president to appear on the “Tonight Show” — more blatant blurring of news and entertainment and from whom?  Barack Obama and the National Barack Channel (NBC).

More do anything to win.  We expect him to host SNL soon — to diffuse their comedic cynicism.

Hill Republican: Stimulus aids illegal immigrants

January 29, 2009

The $800 billion-plus economic stimulus measure making its way through Congress could steer government checks to illegal immigrants, a top Republican congressional official asserted Thursday.

Associated Press

The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don’t have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.

Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.

A revolt among GOP conservatives to similar provisions of a 2008 economic stimulus bill, which sent rebate checks to most wage earners, forced Democratic congressional leaders to add stricter eligibility requirements. That legislation, enacted in February 2008, required that people have valid Social Security numbers in order to get checks.

Stimulus Throws Around So Much Money, Some Lawmakers, Families, Executives Get Rich

January 29, 2009

With something like $800 billion in the stimulus bill passed yesterday in the House of Representatives and maybe several trillion more to be decided later for bank bailouts (not to mention the TARP and other bailouts), who will get rich?

If history is any guide, lawmakers, their families and top executives across the country will get rich with your tax money….

By Stephen Dinan and S. A. Miller
The Washington Times

A top House Republican is demanding an investigation into whether the more than $2 billion for national parks in the House stimulus package is proper in light of the fact that the chief lobbyist for the National Parks Conservation Association is the son of House Appropriations Committee Chairman David R. Obey.

NPCA is a major player in advocating for national parks funding, and its senior vice president for government affairs is Craig Obey, son of the Wisconsin Democrat who has long been his party’s top Appropriations Committee member.

The money included in the stimulus bill that passed Mr. Obey’s committee – $2.25 billion – was about equal to the National Park Service’s total yearly budget, and would be a staggering increase and almost three times the $802 million that the Senate Appropriations Committee approved for park spending in its stimulus bill.

Mexico: Top Cops Bribed By Drug Cartel

January 24, 2009

President Felipe Calderon’s war on drug trafficking has led to his own doorstep, with the arrest of a dozen high-ranking officials with alleged ties to Mexico‘s most powerful drug gang, the Sinaloa Cartel.

The U.S. praises Calderon for rooting out corruption at the top. But critics say the arrests reveal nothing more than a timeworn government tactic of protecting one cartel and cracking down on others.

By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer

Operation Clean House comes just as the U.S. is giving Mexico its first installment of $400 million in equipment and technology to fight drugs. Most will go to a beefed-up federal police agency run by the same people whose top aides have been arrested as alleged Sinaloa spies.

“If there is anything worse than a corrupt and ill-equipped cop, it is a corrupt and well-equipped cop,” said criminal justice expert Jorge Chabat, who studies the drug trade.

U.S. drug enforcement agents say they have no qualms about sending support to Mexico.

“We’ve been working with the Mexican government for decades at the DEA,” said Garrison Courtney, spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration. “Obviously, we ensure that the individuals we work with are vetted.”

Poll: Economy, Jobs Top Americans’ Priorities (Global Warming Last); Obama Solutions?

January 23, 2009

The American people gave Barack Obama a mandate to solve the problem.

And the problem is clearly jobs and the economy, a new Pew Research Poll says.

“That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood,” the President said during his Inaugural Day Address.

Former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell said, “The American people, I think fundamentally, bet on President Obama because of the economic situation we are in.”
.
“The stock market dropped another 300 points on this glorious Inauguration Day and people are losing jobs, and that will be No. 1 for him,” Powell said.

America is inching each day closer to an economic stimulus that will give our children and grandchildren more than $2 Trillion in debt.

Yet no one is certain the stimulus will work.

Will Obama Stimulus Create Jobs? Many “Experts” Can’t Say (Or Say No…)

If there is doubt that the American economy will recover as a result of the actions we are taking, we are either taking the wrong actions or we need to ask ourselves “what else should be done? What should we do differently?”

There will be no national security without a strong American economy.  No social security.  No health care. No war on global warming.

A news story this week  said the only segments of the California economy showing “growth” were in the sectors of government and  medical services.  That won’t produce “wealth” for future investment….

As Barack Obama takes office, the public’s focus is overwhelmingly on domestic policy concerns – particularly the economy. Strengthening the nation’s economy and improving the job situation stand at the top of the public’s list of domestic priorities for 2009. Meanwhile, the priority placed on issues such as the environment, crime, illegal immigration and even reducing health care costs has fallen off from a year ago.

PEW Survey

While it is not unusual for the public to prioritize domestic over foreign policy, the balance of opinion today is particularly one-sided. Roughly seven-in-ten Americans (71%) say that President Obama should focus on domestic policy, while just 11% prioritize foreign policy. By comparison, last January, 56% cited domestic policy as most important while 31% said Bush should focus on foreign policy.

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Jan. 7-11 among 1,503 adults on cell phones and landlines, finds that strengthening the economy and improving the job situation are higher priorities today than they have been at any point….

Mayoral But Maybe Immoral and Illegal?

January 22, 2009

More than a year after denying it, the newly elected mayor of Portland has admitted having a sexual relationship with a male teenager in 2005.

This derailed his trip to Washington DC for Barack Obama’s inauguration.  He needed to find more lawyers.

The Oregon Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation.

Sam Adams, who is openly gay, acknowledged the relationship in a statement Monday, after the Willamette Week newspaper broke the story on its Web site.

“I want to apologize to the people of  Portland for my dishonesty and for embarrassing them,” the mayor said this week. “This was a serious error that happened about four years ago. My job now is to come clean — I mucked it up — and to press forward.”

CNN has a report:

Dogfighting Subculture Is Taking Hold in Texas

December 7, 2008

What got Atlanta Falcons NFL star Michael Vick into trouble and gained him hatred from all sorts of Americans is catching on in some places….

****

The two undercover agents were miles from any town, deep in the East Texas countryside, following a car carrying three dogfighting fanatics and a female pit bull known for ripping off the genitals of other dogs. A car trailed the officers with two burly armed guards, hired to protect the dog and a $40,000 wager.

By James C. McKinley Jr.
The New York Times

When the owners of the opposing dog, a crew from Louisiana, got cold feet and took off, the men in the undercover agents’ party reacted with fury, offering to chase them down and kill them. The owner of the female pit bull, an American living in Mexico, was merciful. He decided to take the opposing dog and let the men live, the officers said.

Over 17 months, the agents from the Texas state police penetrated a murky and dangerous subculture in East Texas, a world where petty criminals, drug dealers and a few people with ordinary jobs shared a passion for watching pit bulls tear each other apart in a 12-foot-square pit.

Investigators found that dogfighting was on the rise in Texas and was much more widespread than they had expected. The ring broken up here had links to dogfighting….
