For Obama, Pelosi “Spring Break” Means Your Tax Dollars Fund the Trip: Even if You’re Unemployed

March 12, 2009

Did you lose your job?  Your house?  Is your IRA worthless?  Did Bernie the Bandito rob you of your retirement?

My wife and I can’t go on “spring break” because we have no money for that kind of thing any more: but President Barack Obama will leave Washington DC before long because he now needs and undoubtedly deserves a spring break with Michelle and his kids.  And in doing that, Obama will be the first president since Grover Cleveland not to attend the first Gridiron Club Dinner of his presidency.

That’s not a big loss since Joe Biden has agreed to step in and he is always a hoot with his ad lib remarks: like you can always find Indians and Pakistanis working in 7-11….

And Nancy Pelosi will undoubtedly fly home to San Francisco in comfort and style care of the U.S. Air Force and paid for by you and me….

While Warren Buffett has said the nation should be on a war footing to solve our economic troubles, it is still business as usual for the American elected-elite….

And the mainstream media that launched Obama on the fast track from community organizer to President of the United States won’t say a word…..

Dumb and Dumber: Spring break

From mediabistro.com

A Gridiron Club member tells FBDC first that President Obama will not attend this year’s dinner next Saturday, March 21st. He will be the first president since Grover Cleveland not to attend the first Gridiron Club Dinner of his presidency.

This year’s date coincides with the spring break of President Obama’s daughters’ school and club members have been informed the Obama family will be out of town, likely in Chicago.

Vice President Joe Biden will attend and speak at the dinner in his place. This member tells us the club is delighted to have Vice President Biden, but that there will be some very disappointed guests.

Each year the dinner includes satirical musical skits choreographed by the members, and remarks by the president and various members of each party. President Obama spoke as a Senator at the March 2006 dinner.

The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 and this year will be the 124th dinner. Membership is by invitation only and its 65 members include the most prestigious journalists in Washington.

Obama on Education: What’s Good For You Is Wrong for Sasha, Malia

March 10, 2009

Obama on Education:

1.  My kids get to go to private schools.

2.  Vouchers for federal school choice program for low-income families in Washington, D.C. are wrong.

Do we hear correctly?

Hope turned into hypocrocy (a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess).

Also: as anyone who understands the schools of Washington DC can attest: money spent on education sometimes means nothing in terms of better student performance.  Two years ago, the Law School of the University of the District of Columbia spent more per student than any other law school in the nation.  The success rate at passing the bar the first time was the nation’s worst….

If you add up the stimulus bill, Obama’s proposed foreclosure fix, and the omnibus spending bill House Democrats are preparing, the administration is kicking off its tenure by spending a whopping $1.4 trillion.

There’s money for green golf carts. There’s money for ACORN. There’s money for weatherizing galore!

But there are some things the Democrat-controlled Congress will not countenance spending money on. Namely, Sakeithia, 12, Rashawn, 16, Paul, 11, Dominique, 14, Breanna, 9, Jordan, 17, Fransoir, 12, and De’Andre, 9.

They’re all Washington, D.C. kids attending private schools thanks in part to a federally funded school-voucher program. The program was enacted five years ago after a heated battle in the Senate, and supporters say it’s unlikely it will be reauthorized by the Democratic Congress unless they’re lobbied something fierce.

The fiscal 2009 omnibus Appropriations bill (HR 1105) would require that the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program — known as the D.C. voucher program — be reauthorized by Congress and then approved by the D.C. government in order for the program to receive federal funding after the 2009-2010 academic year.

But Republicans and advocates say the program is unlikely to be reauthorized with Democrats controlling Congress.

“It would certainly be a steep hill for supporters of the program to climb given the slim margins this program passed with back when conservatives controlled the Congress,” said Dan Lips, a senior policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation. The D.C. government may be more willing to support the program, he said.

The D.C. voucher program — the first to provide federally funded vouchers to students — was launched as a five-year pilot program through the 2004 omnibus appropriations law (PL 108-199).

Nancy Pelosi’s office offered a “wait-and-see” soundbite on the program, but the language in the bill is more clear about its fate:

By Philip Elliott, AP

President Barack Obama on Tuesday embraced a new approach to public education that adds up to merit pay for the better teachers and longer days and school years for students.

These proposals, which constitute the new president’s vision of an education system that meets 21st century challenges, were sure to generate loud criticism, particularly from teachers’ union.

Educators oppose charter schools because they divert tax dollars away from traditional public schools. Merit-based systems for teachers have been anathema to teachers’ unions, a powerful force in Obama’s Democratic Party.

Obama acknowledged this in his talk to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

“Too many supporters of my party have resisted the idea of rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay, even though we know it can make a difference in the classroom,” he said, delivering the first major education speech of his presidency. “Too many in the Republican Party have opposed new investments in early education, despite compelling evidence of its importance.”

But he argued that a far-reaching overhaul of the nation’s education system is an economic imperative that can’t wait, despite the urgency of the financial crisis and other pressing issues.

“Despite resources that are unmatched anywhere in the world, we have let our grades slip, our schools crumble, our teacher quality fall short, and other nations outpace us,” Obama said. “The relative decline of American education is untenable for our economy, unsustainable for our democracy, and unacceptable for our children. We cannot afford to let it continue. What is at stake is nothing less than the American dream.”

The ideas the president promoted were nearly all elements of his campaign platform last year. He only barely mentioned the reauthorization of the Bush-era No Child Left Behind Act, which introduced sweeping reforms that schools are struggling to meet without the funding to match. Obama said his administration would “later this year” ensure that schools get the funding they need and that the money is conditioned on results.

Among the principles Obama laid out were:

Super Bowl Cancels Schools; American Education Easily Delayed By Party, Storm, etc.

February 1, 2009

President Obama joked last week in apparent disapproval as Washington DC metro schools were closed for a minor, by Chicago standards, snow and ice storm.

He even quoted his children making fun of the Washington DC culture.

Now the Pittsburgh schools have already announced a two hour late opening time to accomodate students and parents after the Super Bowl party.

Seems it doesn’t take much to stop education in America.

After the earthquake in China last year, just about all the schools were ruined in the earthquake area.  Makeshift schools started soon thereafter in tents and on roadsides.

You reap what you sew….

Paparazzi Presidency?

January 29, 2009

As reporters and the media waited for President Obama to make an appearance at the White House yesterday, soft piano music wafted through the room.

I thought for a second I was in a Hollywood hotel bar.

And tonight CBS News delved into the possibilities that Sasha and Malia might be the nation’s new fashion and trend setters. Tween idols.

The President is young, hip, articulate and pleasant to look at.  Ditto his bride and children.

So there will be a natural trend by some to move the serious business of government closer to the frivolous business of making money with trends, fashion, sex, and what’s cool.

Hollywood and the trend setters of the nation and the world need to show some caution and respect: and the Obama family itself needs to take the lead.  Mrs. Obama and her Mom sure seem to have the strength to nip this in the bud and make it go away….  If that is what they want….

(CBS) Call it Sasha and Malia Mania.

The Obama girls are getting a lot of attention these days, creating a global sensation with their smiles and styles, observes CBS News correspondent Bianca Solorzano.. American tweens, in particular, seem fascinated with Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10.

From inauguration eve, dancing to their idols the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, to the next day, when they officially became the first children, photographers caught their every move.

“They’re still into wanting to perform,” first lady Michelle Obama told CBS News. “I’m trying to get them focused on like law or something like that. But right now, they love the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana. So I think they see themselves as Disney potential!”

But now, Solorzano notes, marketing experts say they have the potential to be real pop culture trendsetters.

Mother in Law in Chief to Move Into Obama White House

January 9, 2009

Get ready for the in-law in chief.

Transition officials said Friday that President-elect Barack Obama‘s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, is moving into the White House to join Michelle Obama and their two children.

It’s not clear whether the move will be permanent.

Katie McCormick Lelyveld, the press secretary for Michelle Obama, said Robinson would decide in coming months whether she wants to stay in Washington.

Robinson retired from her job as a bank executive secretary to help with her granddaughters during the campaign.

From the New York Times
Ulysses S. Grant shared space with his father-in-law, who grumbled and squabbled with other relatives, historians say. Harry S. Truman lived with his mother-in-law, who declared that she knew “dozens of men better qualified” to preside over the Oval Office.

On Friday, the transition team of President-elect Barack Obama confirmed that his 71-year-old mother-in-law would be moving, at least temporarily, into the grand residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. While Grant and Truman might have been forgiven for gritting their teeth at such a prospect, Mr. Obama has said he will be delighted to have his wife’s mother, Marian Robinson, join the first family in Washington.

After all, Mrs. Robinson, known as a loving, tough-minded matriarch who rarely shies from speaking her mind, has been the bedrock of the Obama family. During the presidential campaign, she retired from her job as a bank secretary to care for the Obama girls, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, while their parents were on the road.

She accompanied them to school and piano and dance lessons, cooked their meals, ran their baths and put them to bed. And she is expected to continue to play a critical role in the family’s effort to keep the girls’ lives as normal as possible.
