Rahm Emanuel Can Bring Down Obama

March 26, 2009

The Chicago Tribune is an example of a newspaper America needs to speak truth to power.  And in this environment of failing newspapers, many people like Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel and Rod Blagojevich would like the Trib to just go away……

Rahm Emanuel has been discussed as a possible troublemaker or ringleader in many questionable White House operations — already — but we’ve noticed that Bill O’Reilly won’t say anything about this until and unless more is disclosed.

What we do know is that Emanuel has a daily phone call with ABC news host George Stephanopoulos of “This Week,” frequent CNN talking head Paul Begula and James Carville.

We suspect Emanuel has a hand in the far left liberal media manipulation effort but we don’t see a “conspiracy;” just a tendency toward very inappropriate conduct: the kind that got the Nixon White House into trouble.

That’s not much….

Emanuel is also apparently one of the first to say, “never waste a good crisis.”

When asked why the White House Chief of Staff, President Obama’s Chief of Staff, got involved with trashing Rush Limbaugh, Charles Krauthammer said, “Because he loves to make mischief, because he wants to stay in power and because it is fun.”

Before its portfolio of bad loans helped trigger the current housing crisis, mortgage giant Freddie Mac was the focus of a major accounting scandal that led to a management shake-up, huge fines and scalding condemnation of passive directors by a top federal regulator.

The Chicago Tribune

One of those allegedly asleep-at-the-switch board members was Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel—now chief of staff to President Barack Obama—who made at least $320,000 for a 14-month stint at Freddie Mac that required little effort.

As gatekeeper to Obama, Emanuel now plays a critical role in addressing the nation’s mortgage woes and fulfilling the administration’s pledge to impose responsibility on the financial world.

Emanuel’s Freddie Mac involvement has been a prominent point on his political résumé, and his healthy payday from the firm has been no secret either. What is less known, however, is how little he apparently did for his money and how he benefited from the kind of cozy ties between Washington and Wall Street that have fueled the nation’s current economic mess.

No, he wasn't thumbing his nose at ex- White House staffers. At least no one thinks he was. As new presidential Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel made his way to his seat for the inauguration, his former congressional colleagues playfully heckled the ex- Illinois congressman from their seats on the inaugural platform. Ever combative, and equally playful, Emanuel heckled them back, spokeswoman Sarah Feinberg said.

Dick Morris On Rahm Emanuel

Published in the New York Post February 17, 2009

News broke last week that Rahm Emanuel, now White House chief of staff, lived rent- free for years in the home of Rep. Rosa De Lauro (D-Conn.) – and failed to disclose the gift, as congressional ethics rules mandate. But this is only the tip of Emanuel’s previously undislosed ethics problems.

One issue is the work Emanuel tossed the way of De Lauro’s husband. But the bigger one goes back to Emanuel’s days on the board of now-bankrupt mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

Emanuel is a multimillionaire, but lived for the last five years for free in the tony Capitol Hill townhouse owned by De Lauro and her husband, Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg.

During that time, he also served as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee – which gave Greenberg huge polling contracts. It paid Greenberg’s firm $239,996 in 2006 and $317,775 in 2008. (Emanuel’s own campaign committee has also paid Greenberg more than $50,000 since 2004.)

To be fair, Greenberg had polling contracts with the DCCC before – but each new election cycle brings its own set of consultants. And Emanuel was certainly generous with his roommate.

Emanuel never declared the substantial gift of free rent on any of his financial-disclosure forms. He and De Lauro claim that it was just allowable “hospitality” between colleagues. Hospitality – for five years?

Some experts suggest that it was also taxable income: Over five years, the free rent could easily add up to more than $100,000.

Nor is this all that seems to have been missed in the Obama team’s vetting process. Consider: Emanuel served on the Freddie Mac board of directors during the time that the government-backed lender lied about its earnings, a leading contributor to the current economic meltdown.

The Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight Agency later singled out the Freddie Mac board as contributing to the fraud in 2000 and 2001 for “failing in its duty to follow up on matters brought to its attention.” In other words, board members ignored the red flags waving in their faces.

The SEC later fined Freddie $50 million for its deliberate fraud in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Meanwhile, Emanuel was paid more than $260,000 for his Freddie “service.” Plus, after he resigned from the board to run for Congress in 2002, the troubled agency’s PAC gave his campaign $25,000 – its largest single gift to a House candidate.

That’s what friends are for, isn’t it?

Now Rahm Emanuel is in the White House helping President Obama dig out of the mess that Freddie Mac helped start.

The president’s chief of staff isn’t subject to Senate confirmation, but his ethics still matter. Is this the change that we can depend on?

Spending Priority on Infrastructure Needed: Schwarzenegger, Rendell, Bloomberg Tell Obama

March 22, 2009

President Obama is pressing ahead on his budget priorities of health care, education, energy and the environment.

But three top civic leaders are reminging him not to neglect infrastructure.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” with David Gregory on Sunday to urge a higher priority for national spending on infrastructure….

By Rob Hotakainen, McClatchy

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger went to the White House on Friday with Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to press President Barack Obama for more federal aid for infrastructure projects.

Noting that California’s unemployment rate had risen to 10.5 percent, Schwarzenegger said a good response would be to increase government spending on roads and bridges and other projects.

“This creates jobs,” he said. “We had a terrific meeting.”

Schwarzenegger and Obama appear to be developing a close relationship. There was no mention Friday of the moment in October when, in the heat of the presidential election, Schwarzenegger compared Obama’s policies to European socialism.

Schwarzenegger said at the time that Obama “says he wants to pursue the same spread-the-wealth ideas that Europe had decades ago.”

On Thursday, when the two appeared together in Los Angeles, the governor praised Obama for his “courageous leadership and the great commitment he has displayed.” And he said California is “benefiting tremendously” from the economic stimulus package Obama has put together.

Obama reciprocated, calling Schwarzenegger “one of the great innovators of state government” who has turned out to be “just an outstanding partner” for his administration.

“I’m grateful for him,” Obama said.

Obama and Leno Discuss Congress, AIG: “It Kind of Scared Me”

March 20, 2009

Between President Barack Obama and Jay Leno, the one who seemed to understand the Congress best was Jay Leno when he said of the 90% tax bill for AIG employees: it “kind of scared me.”

“If the government decides they don’t like a guy, all of the sudden hey we’re going to tax you, and, boom, and it passes, that’s seems a little scary,” he said. “It was frightening to me as an American that Congress or whoever could decide I don’t like that group, let’s pass a law and tax them 90 percent.”

That’s un-American, was the implication.

Un-American and probably unconstitutional.

And certainly a stupid waste of congressional time and effort — and certain proof of congressional stupidity.

Given the opportunity to lead on the economy, the U.S. Congress has given us the stimulus, pork, and earmarks.

Now it gives us doubt without investment at all.

It serves up a legally questionable and faith-in-government damaging self-inflicted wound.

The world is in a crisis of confidence fueled by such brainless U.S. behavior — never mind the global recession that most blame on the U.S.

The world is seeking solutions but has only been sent more doubt and missteps by Americans in the corporate and government sphere.

With Leno, Obama rolled out caution and explained that people should lower their expectations.

Americans were already doing that.

“Look, I understand Congress’ frustrations,” he said on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

He does?

Then he should fire Tim Geithner and hire a leader.  Or two.

When the Congress has no leadership to turn to it is stuck with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Braney Frank and Chris Dodd.

On Jay Leno’s show, only one headliner said anything memorable last night  and that came from Leno himself.

Obama, Pelosi: Anything to Win

March 19, 2009

Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are all about changing America: and not necessarily the old fashioned way with public debate, wise congressional deliberation, laws and courts.

This is now about anything to win.

President Obama’s “outrage” at AIG paying bonuses is theater of the absurd.  He could care less about $165 million.  He sits atop a several trillion dollar empire in real trouble.  What he wants is to demonize Wall Street, “Big Business” and the leadership of the “old” capitalisim, just as he demonized “big oil.”

By rushing his economic stimulus through congress, and in the confusion making sure bonus money for corporations like AIG was protected, the White House, Treasury and perhaps even the Fed engineered the AIG outrage  in order to overhaul regulations governing American business.

You’ll never convince me otherwise and you’ll never convince me that Chris Dodd or Tim Geithner has the brains or the stones to do this on their own.  Obama and Rahm Emanuel certainly might….

Now the president will go on Jay Leno: the first sitting president to appear on the “Tonight Show” — more blatant blurring of news and entertainment and from whom?  Barack Obama and the National Barack Channel (NBC).

More do anything to win.  We expect him to host SNL soon — to diffuse their comedic cynicism.

And then we have Nancy Pelosi, the third in line to the presidency, virtually telling illegal immigrants to violate the law: that the law is “Un-American.”

Well, here’s more “anything to win” — changing law by illegal acts and shenanigans.

If Nancy wants to make good law; she is in the catbird seat to do so.  The Speaker of the House knows how to make good law and how to defeat those that stand in her way too….

Pelosi made the stimulus bill and Obama has already offered her the health care revolution.  But she’s not satisfied yet: now she’ll rewrite immigration law by not picking up a pen: she’ll use the microphone.

Where in the World Is Matt Lauer? In The Tank With Obama…

March 13, 2009

Where in the World Is Matt Lauer?  Easy: he’s holed up at the liberal bastion: NBC (National Barack Channel).

He won’t be travelling the world this spring because so many people in the world blame the U.S. for the global recession and even more are starting to worry that Barack Obama can’t make things better soon enough.

Matt can’t go to Rome: he’s pro-abortion and the Pope is there.  Matt can’t go to China, where 20 million migrants are out of jobs and the government fears “social unrest.”  Matt can’t go to Tibet: the Chinese will have a fit.  Even after Barack Obama gave up on human rights abuses in Chinese, their Premier said he’s worried about buying more U.S. Treasuries.  Matt can’t go to Britain: Obama “snubbed” their PM and the Brit media has taken up the Welcome Mat, Matt.

Matt can’t go to Japan after the Japanese got the feeling Obama was getting soft on North Korea.

Matt can’t go to Switzerland.  The Swiss are nervous after scores of new Yanks arrived to avoid paying higher taxes in the U.S. — and because congress wants Switzerland to allow them to find out who these Yanks are….

Matt can’t go to Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan or Pakistan — despite the fact that Obama loves them all, they are too dangerous; filled with guys the Obama Administration won’t name.

Hint: terrorists.

There just are too few places for poor Matt Lauer to go.

Even Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the U.N. called the U.S. a “deadbeat nation.”

So the trip is cancelled.

Obama adviser: Auto industry must restructure

February 15, 2009

President Barack Obama‘s senior adviser said Sunday that any plan to shore up the auto industry will need to require sacrifice by all involved, from auto workers and industry executives to shareholders and creditors.

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer

General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC are expected to submit plans to the government by a Tuesday deadline to show how they can repay billions in loans and become viable in spite of a drop in auto sales not seen for a generation.

“We need an auto industry in this country. There are millions of lives, livelihoods that depend on it,” White House adviser David Axelrod said on “Meet the Press” on NBC. “We have a real interest in seeing the auto industry survive, but it’s going to require a major restructuring of the auto industry.”

Asked if the U.S. economy could withstand a bankruptcy at GM, Axelrod didn’t respond directly. Executives at the two automakers have said bankruptcy would not benefit their companies because consumers would be reluctant to buy cars from an automaker that might go out of business.

“How that restructuring comes is something that has to be determined,” he said. “But it’s going to be something that’s going to require sacrifice not just from the auto workers but also from creditors, from shareholders and the executives who run the company. And everyone’s going to have to get together here to build companies that can compete in the future.”

Axelrod wouldn’t say whether the administration would offer the auto industry more bailout money. GM already has borrowed $9.4 billion to stay in business, and it would receive an addition $4 billion if the Treasury Department approves its viability plan. Chrysler wants $3 billion more on top of the $4 billion it has already borrowed.

“We need to see what it is that they come up with this week,” he said.

NBC Rejects Obama Super Bowl Ad and Sexy PETA Veggie Pitch

January 30, 2009

A popular pro-life video portraying President Obama as an unborn child has been rejected by NBC-TV as an ad during Sunday’s Super Bowl.

By JUlia Duin
The Washington Times

“Imagine Spot 1,” a YouTube video that has amassed more than 700,000 hits since its Jan. 2O premiere on Black Entertainment Television, was submitted earlier this week to NBC by Fidelis, a Chicago-based Catholic organization. Its subsidiary, CatholicVote.org, runs the 30-second spot on its Web site.

Brian Burch, president of Fidelis, said NBC originally responded with a proposal for a package including ads on NBC-owned or operated stations in the country’s top 10 markets plus an additional four cities for a price tag of $1.5 million to $1.8 million. The immensely popular football game is known for the unusual and trendy kinds of ads it attracts.

“We put out the call to our members and large pro-life benefactors who told us they would put up significant dollars to make this happen,” Mr. Burch said. “I was told the ad was approved and then there were a number of attorneys working on it. Then I was told they didn’t want to run political or advocacy ads.”

NBC Says No to PETS Veggie Super Bowl Ad

By GINA DINUNNO
TV GUIDE

PETA loves promoting their animal-friendly campaigns with smokin’ hot, half-naked chicks, but it turns out NBC isn’t a fan. For a proposed Super Bowl commercial touting vegetarianism, the animal rights group went the scandalous route, featuring women in lingerie doing provocative things with veggies. NBC requested PETA cut the woman “rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin” and the one “screwing herself with the broccoli.” PETA decided to keep their ad and not air it — but still get lots of online attention from people wanting to see the ad too hot for NBC. Well played, PETA.

NBC Banning Conservatives?

January 6, 2009

NBC TV, widely criticized for its left-leaning and Pro-Obama agenda during the election campaign, has apparently continued its biased ways.

The Drudge Report is saying the the leading conservative writer Ann Coulter has been “banned from NBC.”

Coulter has a new book that is widely critical of the liberal media including NBC….

The nation’s top selling conservative author has been banned from appearing on NBC, insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
.
“We are just not going to have her on any more, it’s over,” a top network source explains.
.
But a second top suit strongly denies there is any “Coulter ban”.
.
“Look for a re-invite, as soon as Wednesday,” said the news executive, who asked not to be named.

NBC’s TODAY show abruptly cut Ann Coulter from its planned Tuesday broadcast, claiming the schedule was overbooked.

Executives at NBC TODAY replaced Coulter with showbiz reporter Perez Hilton, who recently offered $1,000 to anyone who would throw a pie at Ann Coulter.
.
Hilton is also launching a new book this week, RED CARPET SUICIDE.

Coulter was set to unveil her new book, GUILTY. One network insider claims it was the book’s theme — a brutal examination of liberal bias in the new era — that got executives to dis-invite the controversialist.
.
“We are just not interested in anyone so highly critical of President-elect Obama, right now,” a TODAY insider reveals. “It’s such a downer. It’s just not the time, and it’s not what our audience wants, either.” Others inside the peacock network strongly deny the book’s theme is at issue.
.
For the book, Coulter reportedly received the most-lucrative advance ever paid to a conservative author. The TODAY show eagerly invited the author months ago, for her first network interview on GUILTY. The exclusive was to air during the show’s 7 AM hour. The cut came Monday afternoon.
.
Coulter was also to appear on the TODAY’s fourth hour. A host even teased the segment saying the ‘conservative pit bull and bestselling author’ would be a guest.

NBC’s cable outlet, MSNBC, will also become a Coulter-free zone, insiders explain.

Morning host Joe Scarborough is said to be concerned with the new ban. “He’s working to overrule it,” tips a source.

By Paul J. Gough, Reuters

NBC News denied Monday that conservative author Ann Coulter has been banned from the network after “Today” dropped her from Tuesday’s program because of breaking-news events.

The Coulter incident garnered huge headlines on the Drudge Report, which reported that network sources said NBC was not going to allow the frequent guest to appear any more.

That’s not true, NBC News said Monday. Coulter’s segment was dropped from the schedule because of news that the show was expecting to cover in the Gaza Strip with the Israeli military action there and in Washington with the Obama transition. “Today” had booked former British prime minister Tony Blair. Coulter was to promote her new book, “Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and Their Assault on America.”

“We’ve had Ann Coulter on ‘Today’ many times, but because of the news in Washington and the Middle East, we decided to cancel her appearance tomorrow,” NBC News said in a statement Monday. “Understanding the media as well as she does, we are sure she knows this happens from time to time. We look forward to welcoming her back in the future.”

Instead, Coulter will appear on CBS’ “The Early Show” to promote her book, according to an announcement on Coulter’s Web site. It wasn’t confirmed immediately by CBS.

“I guess this ends the ‘they just want to get ratings’ argument about liberal media bias,” Coulter wrote on her site of NBC. She was scheduled to appear January 9 on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity & Colmes.”

Coulter has a history with NBC, particularly “Today.” She went toe-to-toe with former co-host Katie Couric in 2002, whom she called “the affable Eva Braun” in her book “Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right.” Couric protested Coulter’s portrayal of the “Today” interview with Ronald Reagan biographer Edmund Morris that called the former president “an apparent airhead.”

Lasting Legacy 2008 Part II

December 24, 2008

Another of those that passed away this year reminded me to question all things and all people.

Tim Russert made me think and for that I am very grateful.

Russert, the long time host of “Meet the Press” on NBC each Sunday, died this last June 13.

He probably died from working too hard to make us all think and not taking enough care of himself.

We are all diminished by his loss.

Tim Russert

Alex Wong / Getty Images file

Russert caused me to rething, delve into and research hundreds of issues and topics.  But one interview with Vice President Dick Cheney stands out for me.

I was heavily involved with couter-terror activities in the tribal areas of Pakistan.  The Taliban and al-Qaeda, had, in my opinion, taken the upper hand and President Musharraf and his army had allowed terrorists to retain their valuable refuge.

On Sunday, September 10, 2006, Tim hosted Vice President Cheny who made an extremely long supporting speech on the importance of General Musharraf to the United States.

I heard about this while in Pakistan working near my friend Muhammad.

Muhammad is now dead, killed by the Taliban, and Musharraf is no longer the kingpin in Pakistan.

But it was Tim Russert’s careful, probing inquiry with Cheney that opened my eyes to the growing troubles between the U.S. and Pakistan.

******

Part of Vice President Cheney’s Remarks on “Meet the Press” with Tim Russert on Sunday, September 10, 2006:

“President Musharraf has been a great ally. There was, prior to 9/11, a close relationship between the Pakistan intelligence services and the Taliban. Pakistan was one of only three nations that recognized, diplomatically recognized the government of Afghanistan at that particular time. But the fact is Musharraf has put his neck on the line in order to be effective in going after the extremist elements including al-Qaeda and including the Taliban in Pakistan. There have been three attempts on his life, two of those by al-Qaeda over the course of the last three years. This is a man who has demonstrated great courage under very difficult political circumstances and has been a great ally for the United States”.

“So there’s no question in that area along the Afghan/Pakistan border is something of a no man’s land, it has been for centuries. It’s extraordinarily rough territory. People there who move back and forth across the border, they were smuggling goods before there was concern about, about terrorism. But we need to continue to work the problem. Musharraf just visited Karzai in, in Kabul this past week, they’re both going to be here during the course of the U.N. General Assembly meetings over the course of the next few weeks. We worked that area very hard, and the Paks have been great allies in that effort.”

“Pakistan, we’ve gone in and worked closely with Musharraf to take down al-Qaeda. Saudi Arabia, same thing. In all of those cases, it’s been a matter of getting the locals into the fight to prevail over al-Qaeda and al-Qaeda-related tyrants.”

“Think of Musharraf who puts his neck on the line every day he goes to work, when there’ve been attempts on his life because of his support for our position. And they look over here and they see the United States that’s made a commitment to the Iraqis, that’s gone in and taken down the old regime, worked to set up a democracy, worked to set up security forces, and all of a sudden we say it’s too tough, we’re going home. What’s Karzai going to think up in Kabul? Is he going to have any confidence at all that he can trust the United States, that in fact we’re there to get the job done? What about Musharraf? Or is Musharraf and those people you’re talking about who are on the fence in Afghanistan and elsewhere going to say, ‘My gosh, the United States hasn’t got the stomach for the fight. Bin Laden’s right, al-Qaeda’s right, the United States has lost its will and will not complete the mission,’ and it will damage our capabilities and all of those other war fronts, if you will, in the global war on terror.”

Sorry, Conan, Jay Leno Stays at Troubled NBC in Prime Time

December 9, 2008

The Peacock has laid an egg or hatched some creative magic.  Depending upon your point of view…. is staying at NBC, and he’s moving to prime time. The network announced Tuesday that Leno will host a show five nights a week at 10 p.m. Eastern, after he leaves the “Tonight” show next year. The network had announced nearly five years ago that Conan O’Brien would move to “Tonight” and succeed Leno.

****

Jay Leno

The deal not only prevents Leno from moving to another network and competing with O’Brien, it also has the potential to be a big cost savings for NBC. A talk show is considerably cheaper to produce than the dramas that usually air at 10 p.m. Eastern.

Jay Leno in 2005
Above: Jay Leno

Leno could now deliver his nightly monologue and sketches to more viewers. Generally about 50 percent more people are watching TV at 10 p.m. than at 11:30 p.m.

Dramas used to be a mainstay of network schedules, and NBC’s own history at the time slot includes “ER,” “Hill Street Blues,” “Law & Order” and “L.A. Law.”

Yet dramas have been fading in recent years. One reason is digital video recorders; more people are watching shows they taped earlier than the live 10 p.m. shows.

Ten years ago, “ER” was the top-rated show in television, with an average of 25.4 million viewers. This season, its last, “ER” is averaging 9.9 million viewers and is ranked No. 33 in prime time.

Besides “ER,” NBC this season airs “Law & Order” and its “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” spinoff in the 10 p.m. time slot — both shows that could easily move to an earlier hour. “My Own Worst Enemy” and “Lipstick Jungle,” shows in the 10 p.m. hour on Monday and Friday, have already been canceled.

NBC had said last summer that Leno’s last “Tonight” show would be on Friday, May 29, and that O’Brien would take over the following Monday, June 1.

Jimmy Fallon is taking over the 12:30 a.m. time slot that O’Brien is vacating.
