Human Trafficking For Sex In The U.S.

She testifies in federal court how a group of immigrants duped her into coming to the U.S., forced her to sell herself and kept her captive.

When Sandra agreed to make the perilous trek from her native Guatemala to the United States in 2006, she said, she was lured by the prospect of a job as a housekeeper that would enable her to send money to her impoverished family back home.

Her father had a hernia that prevented him from working, and money was so tight that she and her 12 siblings sometimes didn’t have shoes or enough to eat, the young woman testified Thursday in federal court in Los Angeles.

But not long after Sandra was delivered to L.A. by human-smuggling “coyotes,” she learned that the job awaiting her had nothing to do with cleaning houses.

Instead, she said, she was told that she would have to “lay with men.”

“Did you understand you were going to be working as a prostitute?” asked Assistant U.S. Atty. Cheryl Murphy.

“I did not know what that word was,” Sandra responded through a Spanish-language translator. “Now I do.”

Democratic Scandals Boring, Less Sexual, But Genuine

January 5, 2009

For many years, Republicans represented the party of salacious homosexual bathroom sex-trysts while Democrats confined themselves to more workaday financial improprieties, such as storing massive collections of marked bills in their freezers. You’d have been hard pressed to pin a pay-for-play scheme on a Democrat because they were too unimportant: they just didn’t have any political influence worth selling.

Now Democrats have reclaimed the White House and both parties of Congress, so of course they’re obliged to pull double duty in both sexual and political scandals. Let’s see, they’ve got the sex scandals pretty well covered: who can forget such luminaries as Eliot Spitzer, Patron Saint of Hookers; Tim Mahoney, the proud Florida Democrat with multiple mistresses who replaced the Republican with the “drinking problem”; the lizard-tongued humanoid adulterer John Edwards; and last but not least, America’s greatest mayor and sexiest texter, Kwame Kilpatrick.

A recent flood of news about Democrats doing improper, non-sexual stuff for favors means they’ve got the political side of scandals covered, too. Let’s review:

And the latest: the portly and affable Bill Richardson, who couldn’t be Secretary of State because he would have been murdered, personally, by the Clintons, so instead he settled for Commerce Secretary before he got roped into a grand jury investigation. Apparently some brilliant financial company that advised Jefferson County, Alabama into near-bankruptcy was also hired to work its magic on the state of New Mexico after it donated 100 grand to various political action committees formed by Bill Richardson.

So now Richardson has said to Barack Obama, “Pls do not consider me for Commerce, as I have this little grand jury problem to deal with.” This is really too bad, because Bill Richardson spoke Spanish! Also he was very smart, and experienced in talking with nasty dictators. Now Obama will have to find some other sucker to help him revive the economy and control the weather.

Carville’s 2009 Predictions: Stand By For More Democrat Scandals

January 3, 2009

In domestic politics, my first prediction is one that pains me to make, but I’ll make it anyway.

The Democratic Party has had a recent run of corruption and sex scandals. Mathematicians say that there are no such things as streaks and that the last event has nothing to do with the next. The only people who disagree are crapshooters and political operatives. Since I am both, I firmly believe that there are streaks and that political scandals happen in clusters.

James Carville

The Republican Party had its fair share of scandal and charges of deeply imbedded corruption preceding the 2006 election and leading up to the 2008 elections.

It doesn’t hurt to point out that these types of things are also more likely to harm the party in the majority — Republicans had more elected politicians (315 Republican officeholders in House, Senate, and state governorships) leading up to 2006.

With two big Democratic elections in a row, Democrats now hold a larger majority — 340 U.S. representatives, senators and governors. Simple math and history point to the fact that the more elected officials a party has in office, the more likely its politicians will get caught up in some sort of scandal.

The current streak, however removed from President-elect Barack Obama, doesn’t bode well for Democrats in 2009…

Not guilty of anything…Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has some final words for the media after he announces his choice of former Ill. Attorney General Roland Burris to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat in Chicago. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has revoked embattled Gov. Cambodia’s problems with new sex trafficking law

December 27, 2008

Chantha said there was nothing else she could do in Cambodia but become a prostitute.

“If you don’t even have a dollar in your pocket to buy rice, how can you bear looking at your starving relatives?” she said.

“You do whatever to survive, until you start to realize the consequence of your deeds.”

Chanta, in her early twenties, was working in a small red-light district west of the capital Phnom Penh several months ago when she was arrested under Cambodia‘s new sex-trafficking law.

Police nabbed her in a raid and charged her with publicly soliciting sex, fining her nearly two dollars. Then, Chanta claims, the arresting officers gang raped and beat her for six days in detention.

Bruises covered her body, but none of her assailants were brought to court, she said.

The Cambodian government began prosecuting a new “Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation” in February after years of pressure from the United States to clamp down on sex trafficking.

Since then, authorities have conducted brothel raids and street sweeps, but rights groups complain the new law has in many ways worsened the exploitation of women.
