Culture of Corruption: Many Americans Losing Trust in Government?

March 13, 2009

“Go, Mazine (sic) and Nancy. Who listens to professional character assassins such as Malkin? Isn’t Malkin a modern deriviative of Maulkin, one of Macbeth’s witch’s evil associates? Seems like something evil reeks everytime I click on one of these weird missives.”

That according to John Welsh, one of my readers.

We seem to have becme a nation that says its OK to respond to truth with personal attacks and character assassination.

We are too quick to holler racism when the news is color-blind and Barack promised a post-racial world.

We have come to accept lies, corruption and those that break the law.  If you do evil: come back in a few weeks and we’ll forgive.

Bernie Madoff might be the exception….

Do you think Nancy Pelosi will investigate her California pal Maxine Waters for conflict of interest?  There is still an ethics panel in the House, isn’t there?

When Rep. Barney Frank was looking to aid a Boston-based lender last fall, the Massachusetts Democrat urged Maxine Waters, a colleague on the House Financial Services Committee, to “stay out of it,” he says.

The reason: Ms. Waters, a longtime congresswoman from California, had close ties to the minority-owned institution, OneUnited Bank.

Ms. Waters and her husband have both held financial stakes in the bank. Until recently, her husband was a director. At the same time, Ms. Waters has publicly boosted OneUnited’s executives and criticized its government regulators during congressional hearings. Last fall, she helped secure the bank a meeting with Treasury officials.

Here’s another case of splitting the truth….

Candidate For Detroit Mayor a Little Slick With The Truth

Detroit mayoral candidate Dave Bing’s education credentials have come into question, with Syracuse University saying he received his bachelor’s almost three decades after Bing claims he did and an acknowledgment from the candidate’s spokesman that his assertion of having a master’s degree is false.

The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday that Bing has embellished his Syracuse credentials in biographical material. The claim of having a master’s degree in business administration is made on a video directed at pro players preparing for life after basketball.

Syracuse spokesman Kevin Morrow told the newspaper that Bing, who went on to a basketball Hall of Fame career with the Detroit Pistons, wasn’t awarded an undergraduate degree in economics until 1995, after he completed additional courses. Bing has claimed repeatedly he completed college in 1966.

Bing spokesman Cliff Russell told the newspaper the discrepancies are the result of misunderstandings……

Burris Says He’s a Senator; But Without The Oath, He Won’t Be One Even Tuesday

January 5, 2009

Senate Democrats struggled to avert a showdown steeped in race and corruption Monday as a defiant Roland Burris declared, “I’m a United States senator” despite boiling controversy over his appointment to President-elect Barack Obama‘s seat in Congress.

Several officials said it was out of the question that Burris would be sworn into office on Tuesday when other new lawmakers take the oath of office. The officials cited incomplete paperwork, but the dispute was far deeper than that. Burris was named last week by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who faces charges of having attempted to sell the seat.

Burris has not been accused of any wrongdoing, but Senate Democrats expressed the hope that the veteran Illinois Democrat would not violate protocol by attempting to walk uninvited into the chamber. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to address the matter publicly.

At the same time, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., appeared to leave open the possibility of a compromise after having failed to persuade Blagojevich to leave the seat vacant. Burris is scheduled to meet privately on Wednesday with the majority leader in his office a few paces off the Senate floor.

Burris, who is black, downplayed the issue of race at a news conference before boarding a flight from Chicago to Washington — even though supporters have given it prominence.

“I cannot control my supporters. I have never in my life, in all my years of being elected to office, thought anything about race,” he said.

As for Senate Democratic leaders, thus far unwilling to allow him to be seated, he said, “I am a United States senator. They can’t stop me from doing my senatorial duties.”

In fact, he is not, and cannot be unless he is administered the oath of office.

Blagojevich Playing Chicago-Style Hardball; Who Will Respond?

January 2, 2009

Political circuses just don’t get any better than this — unless you happen to care about a new administration taking power in the midst of national and international catastrophes.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich knows how to make life hell for his enemies, who now encompass almost everyone in the Democratic Party, including President-elect Barack Obama. Yet “almost everyone” is the operative phrase. Roland Burris, the veteran African American politician, discovered an affection for the embattled governor after Blagojevich appointed him to Obama’s Senate seat Tuesday.

And even though the Senate’s Democratic leaders, with Obama’s support, said they would not seat any Blagojevich appointee, Burris refused to back down. “The appointment is legal,” Burris told CNN on Wednesday. That slogan lacks the power of, say, “Change We Can Believe In,” but it’s true.

Rep. Bobby Rush entered the Racial Politics Hall of Fame on Tuesday when he asked reporters not to “hang or lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer.” The Chicago Democrat, who only recently said that Blagojevich did not have the standing to fill the seat, raised the stakes Wednesday on CBS by suggesting that if Democratic senators rejected Burris, they would risk comparisons with George Wallace or Bull Connor.
