Illinois GOP leader calls on Sen. Burris to resign

February 16, 2009

“I can’t believe anything that comes out of Mr. Burris at this point,” state Rep. Jim Durkin said. “I think it would be in the best interest of the state if he resigned because I don’t think the state can stand this anymore.”

Happy Presidents’ Day.  Ohio is called the “Mother of Presidents.” Eight Ohioans have become President of the United States.

But Illinois is the current areas of interest.  Abraham Lincoln is from Illinois as is Barack Obama.

Illinois, today, is the wellspring of sewage politics….

Rod Blagojevich casts his shadow upon all other politics and politicians in Illinois….and from Illinois….

One month after Roland Burris was sworn in to the U.S. Senate to represent Illinois and fill Barack Obama’s vacant seat, he’s hearing calls for his resignation.

“I can’t believe anything that comes out of Mr. Burris at this point,” state Rep. Jim Durkin said. “I think it would be in the best interest of the state if he resigned because I don’t think the state can stand this anymore.”

Durkin and House Republican Leader Tom Cross want an investigation of Burris for possible perjury.

Their statements come after Burris over the weekend released a Feb. 5 affidavit that he filed with the Illinois House committee investigating the impeachment of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The affidavit contradicts statements he made last month in front of the committee, before being sworn in Jan. 15.

The discrepancy could mean he perjured himself.

Perjury? Senator Changes His Story Again

February 15, 2009

When a Senator keeps changing his story, that’s normal.  Unless it is perjury….

ByTribune reporters

U.S. Sen. Roland Burris has changed his story again about what happened before ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed him to the Senate, and state Republican leaders said Saturday that they want an investigation into whether he perjured himself.

Burris gradually has acknowledged deeper contacts with Blagojevich allies after initially portraying himself as a surprise pick for the seat the former governor is accused of trying to sell. But Illinois House Republican leaders said they wonder whether Burris purposely deceived the public while under oath last month by not telling a House impeachment panel that Blagojevich’s brother asked for fundraising help before the disgraced ex-governor appointed him.

State Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) said he would ask the now-dormant impeachment committee to refer the matter to Sangamon County State’s Atty. John Schmidt, a Republican, after learning about the revelations by Burris, a Democrat.

Burris acknowledged the discussions with the governor’s brother, Robert, in an affidavit the senator quietly filed Feb. 5 with the head of the committee. Burris said Robert Blagojevich called him three times seeking his fundraising assistance. In addition, Burris said he spoke with three other close associates of the governor and a labor leader with ties to the Blagojevich administration about being appointed to the Senate. Burris previously acknowledged only having spoken to one such friend.

Democrats in the U.S. Senate required that Burris testify fully and truthfully to the House impeachment committee in Springfield before agreeing to seat him. Many said Burris was tainted because he was Blagojevich’s pick after the governor was arrested and charged with corruption, including trying to sell that Senate seat for political or personal gain. Burris said he filed the recent affidavit after reading the transcripts of his sworn testimony and realizing his answers were incomplete.

Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago) said the affidavit suggests Burris wants to be “very forthcoming.” She said the committee may reconvene soon to discuss a variety of follow-up matters.

The new affidavit—filed only after he was sworn in Jan. 15—could damage Burris’ credibility because it’s his third account of what happened behind the scenes preceding Blagojevich’s decision to pick him as President Barack Obama‘s Senate replacement.

Burris initially filed a Jan. 5 affidavit under oath to the special House panel saying his first contact was a Dec. 26 meeting with Blagojevich attorney Sam Adam Jr., who asked whether Burris was interested in filling the vacancy. Previously, “there was not any contact between myself or any of my representatives with Governor Blagojevich or any of his representatives regarding my appointment to the United States Senate,” Burris said.

Under questioning Jan. 8, however, Durkin specifically asked Burris whether he spoke with Blagojevich’s brother as well as several other close Blagojevich associates, including chief of staff John Harris and advisers Doug Scofield, John Wyma and Lon Monk, about his interest in the Senate seat.

NY Gov. Paterson Hammered By Media Over Kennedy Fiasco

(CBS) Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Criticism of Gov. David Paterson’s handling of the Caroline Kennedy fiasco continued unabated Tuesday.

“I’m going to address this issue for the last time,” Paterson said.

Slim chance. With the New York Post comparing his ability to tell the truth to Pinocchio, Paterson was on the hot seat again Tuesday over his administration’s handling of Kennedy.

“I had nothing to do with any of the negative characterizations of any of the candidates, particularly Caroline Kennedy,” Paterson said.

But reporters — some of whom had received calls from “sources close to the governor” attacking Kennedy — peppered the beleaguered governor with questions about the leaks. He was also asked if he would give lie detector tests to his staff.

“I’m not going to hunt down scurrilous rumors,” Paterson said.

After just eight minutes of the tough grilling the governor stalked out of the room with reporters left still asking questions.

“Are you going to apologize to Caroline Kennedy?” one reporter asked.

The furor detracted from the new Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s brief swearing in, where she promised to uphold the constitution.

The controversy has caused the governor’s popularity to plummet.

Blago in “Victim TV Tour” Quotes MLK; But Transcript Quotes May Land Him in Jail

January 27, 2009

“You know, during times like this there’s a saying Dr. (Martin Luther) King had. ‘In the end, we remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.’ It’s a very lonely period. When things like this happen, people tend to be afraid to talk to you,” Governor Rod Blagojevich said today on The Early Show on CBS.

“I have two little girls and they are hearing a lot of bad things about their Dad,” Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich said this morning on the CBS morning show with Harry Smith.

I thought I could hear a judge shout, “Irrelevant. Overruled.”

This is day two of the “Blago Is The Victim” tour on TV.

On the Early Show on CBS this Tuesday the Illinois Governor said, “If present trends continue, I’ll be out of work in the not-too-distant future. I’m not delusional in terms of what my likelihood of success is to convince those senators to give me a fair trial.”

” … It’s more important than me. It’s about the people who twice elected me. You can’t throw a governor out without giving that governor a chance to show he did nothing wrong. That’s what they’re doing. It’s a dangerous precedent.

“But if you’re asking me do I see myself like a modern-day Frank Capra movie, and I’m the Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper character, a guy idealistically trying to do what’s right for people, fighting a system, and then be pushed back? Yeah, I see myself that way.”

Yesterday the Illinois Governor compared himself to Martin L. King, Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi.

Today Blago also quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. in his apparent effort to be more black and more sypathetic and more a victim.

Don’t expect Roland Burris, Oprah or Barack Obama to rush to his defense…..

A day after Gov. Rod Blagojevich‘s loudly proclaimed his innocence during a media blitz, the governor’s more private words are to take center stage at his impeachment trial.

The state Senate was expected Tuesday to hear secretly made wiretaps of Blagojevich allegedly discussing how he could benefit from his appointment power.

Blagojevich never denied the remarks federal prosecutors attribute to him, but insists they were taken out of context and he did nothing illegal.

The impeachment trial — the first for a U.S. governor in more than 20 years — opened Monday with House-appointed prosecutor David Ellis telling senators he will show that Blagojevich “repeatedly and utterly abused the powers and privileges of his office.”

Oprah, Britney, China, ‘If U Seek Amy’ and What Next Rod Blagojevich?

January 26, 2009

China says there is porn everywhere and has shut down over 1,000 web sites to show who’s boss.  Britney Spears supporters say her new album “Circus” is all about fun but critics say she is spelling a nasty word for intercourse in the song about Amy.

And Rod Blagojevich is saying his impeachment is not aboout selling the Senate seat once held by Barack Obama and he is pleading his case on TV and everywhere else….

Blago says he thought about naming Oprah to the Senate….

Here’s what we think: China cares nothing for public morality but it does want to totally control all media so that pro-democracy messages and movements are difficult.

Britney is just trying to make money.

Oprah would be a horrible senator as she doesn’t do her homework.  But then, that is where a lot of people go when they don’t do their homework.

And screw Blago….

Britney Spears is back, annoying parent groups with a new song they say is a crude lyrical trick that doesn’t belong on the airwaves.

The song’s title, “If U Seek Amy,” is sung in such a way as to sound like a crass entreaty instead of advice for finding a girl, according to the Parents Television Council.

“There is no misinterpreting the lyrics to this song, and it’s certainly not about a girl named Amy,” council President Tim Winter said of the third single from Spears’ new album, “Circus.”

Officials from Spears’ label, Jive, could not be reached for comment.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich, taking his defense to television rather than his impeachment trial, lashed out at his accusers Monday and revealed he had considered naming Oprah Winfrey to the U.S. Senate.

The embattled governor told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that the idea of nominating the talk show host came to him as he explored potential candidates for the job that federal prosecutors allege he tried to sell to the highest bidder.

“She seemed to be someone who would help Barack Obama in a significant way become president,” he said. “She was obviously someone with a much broader bully pulpit than other senators.”

The governor worried, though, that the appointment of Winfrey might come across as a gimmick and that the talk show host was unlikely to accept.

In the end, Blagojevich appointed former Illinois attorney general Roland Burris to the vacant seat.

For Obama and other public servants, three tests of integrity

January 20, 2009

Rarely before in American history has there been such a need for the restoration of public trust in our government and businesses.

As Barack Obama takes the oath of office, he does so amid widespread disappointment in the alleged mercenary conduct of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D), the insatiable greed of some in the business community that precipitated the economic meltdown, and the unprecedented Ponzi scheme apparently perpetrated by Bernard Madoff.

These scandals have eroded public confidence and have led to further cynicism about our institutions of government and business. In response, calls are mounting to enact various reforms designed to prevent – or at least uncover faster – such ethical breaches. But something much more fundamental is needed: a restoration of covenantal ideals.

Obama, Biden: Fight Scandal, Corruption, Bad Government Please….

Those who accept the mantle of public service enter into a de facto covenant – a binding agreement – with those who are led, and the first tenet of that covenant is integrity. Public trust can be restored with a clearer understanding of that covenant. Government and business leaders must understand that their part of the covenant requires them to adhere to the highest standards of integrity and civility. Those who are led are also required to perform at their highest standards of integrity and civility. This reciprocal covenant may well involve a degree of selflessness and mutual sacrifice seldom demanded of our citizens today.

Almost 40 years ago, I was sworn in to Richard Nixon’s White House staff. After taking the oath of office, I was given four commissions appointing me to different positions during my tenure over the next four years. Each commission began with these words: “Reposing special trust in the integrity … of [your name] the president appoints you to [your position]” This preamble should have been an imperative for me to fulfill my part of the covenant between myself as a public servant and my fellow citizens.

However, in response to what I erroneously concluded was a national security crisis involving the leak of the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times, I committed a serious crime. I approved a “covert operation” to get derogatory information on the leaker of those documents and deprived a fellow citizen of his right to be free from an unreasonable, unwarranted search of his office, violated the “special trust” that was reposed in my integrity, and breached my duty under the covenant.

Obama, Biden: Fight Scandal, Corruption, Bad Government Please….

January 20, 2009

New government or old government we all want and deserve good government.  Honesty.  Integrity.  Wisdom.  But most of all no illegal activity.

One Democrat will miss Barack Obama’s inauguration in Washington DC today:  Portland, Oregon Mayor Sam Adams, who lied about an affair with a youngster….

This comes soon after the Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon scandal broke into the media…

Among other things, the city’s first black female mayor is accused of stealing gift cards meant for needy families and treating herself to fur coats and pricey hotel stays on her developer-boyfriend’s tab.

Jurors in Baltimore city, typical jurors, they render verdicts from the gut,” said Warren A. Brown, a city defense attorney for more than 20 years. “To hell with the law, to hell with the facts, they will render a verdict that they think is fair, is right.”

Not so fast with that “to hell with the law” talk, Sport.

Add to this the troubles of the Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and others before him (like Spitzer in New York and the Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick….) and it is obvious that we still have a way to go before we know that our governments are “clean”….

Kwame Kilpatrick

Good lesson for the New Obama Administration: keep it clean and honest….

More than a year after denying it, the newly elected mayor of Portland has admitted having a sexual relationship with a male teenager in 2005.

Sam Adams, who is openly gay, acknowledged the relationship in a statement Monday, after the Willamette Week newspaper broke the story on its Web site.

In Washington, D.C., for the inauguration, Adams will cut his trip short to issue a public apology Tuesday afternoon in Portland, said Wade Nkrumah, his spokesman.

Adams, 45, said he and the teen were together in the summer of 2005, shortly after the teenager turned 18 in June, and when Adams was a city commissioner. The revelations come nearly a year and a half after Adams and the teen said rumors of a sexual relationship between them were false.

“I lied at the time because I was afraid that people would believe untrue rumors being circulated by an undeclared mayoral opponent that I had broken a law involving sexual relations with a minor. But this is not a good excuse,” Adams said in his statement.

Despite the rumors, Adams coasted to victory in his race, making Portland the largest U.S. city to ever elect an openly gay mayor. He was sworn in Jan. 1.

In his statement Monday, Adams apologized to the teen for making him lie about the relationship. He also apologized to colleagues and voters.

The young man, now 21, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Now Democrats have reclaimed the White House and both parties of Congress, so of course they’re obliged to pull double duty in both sexual and political scandals. Let’s see, they’ve got the sex scandals pretty well covered: who can forget such luminaries as Eliot Spitzer, Patron Saint of Hookers; Tim Mahoney, the proud Florida Democrat with multiple mistresses who replaced the Republican with the “drinking problem”; the lizard-tongued humanoid adulterer John Edwards; and last but not least, America’s greatest mayor and sexiest texter, Kwame Kilpatrick.

Burris Turned Away at Door of U.S. Senate

January 6, 2009

The man appointed to fill Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, Roland Burris, was turned away from the door of the U.S. Senate this morning.

In a brief news confernce outside the U.S. Capitol building in the rain, Burris spoke briefly before turing the event over to his lawyers.

Burris looked scared and dismayed amid a throng of reporters on a dark, cold, rainy and wet Washington DC.

CNN called the event a “circus” and reported “Burris was surrounded by a swarm of reporters as he tried to join the other senators on the first day of the new Congress.”

Burris Says He’s a Senator; But Without The Oath, He Won’t Be One Even Tuesday

January 5, 2009

Senate Democrats struggled to avert a showdown steeped in race and corruption Monday as a defiant Roland Burris declared, “I’m a United States senator” despite boiling controversy over his appointment to President-elect Barack Obama‘s seat in Congress.

Several officials said it was out of the question that Burris would be sworn into office on Tuesday when other new lawmakers take the oath of office. The officials cited incomplete paperwork, but the dispute was far deeper than that. Burris was named last week by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who faces charges of having attempted to sell the seat.

Burris has not been accused of any wrongdoing, but Senate Democrats expressed the hope that the veteran Illinois Democrat would not violate protocol by attempting to walk uninvited into the chamber. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to address the matter publicly.

At the same time, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., appeared to leave open the possibility of a compromise after having failed to persuade Blagojevich to leave the seat vacant. Burris is scheduled to meet privately on Wednesday with the majority leader in his office a few paces off the Senate floor.

Burris, who is black, downplayed the issue of race at a news conference before boarding a flight from Chicago to Washington — even though supporters have given it prominence.

“I cannot control my supporters. I have never in my life, in all my years of being elected to office, thought anything about race,” he said.

As for Senate Democratic leaders, thus far unwilling to allow him to be seated, he said, “I am a United States senator. They can’t stop me from doing my senatorial duties.”

In fact, he is not, and cannot be unless he is administered the oath of office.
