Craigslist Sued For Selling Sex

March 6, 2009

“Craigslist is the single largest source of prostitution in the nation.”  That according to an Illinois sheriff who filed a lawsuit against Craigslist on Thursday.

Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart sued the owners of the classified ad site in US District Court for facilitating prostitution by failing to block blatant offers to trade sex for money.

“Missing children, runaways, abused women and women trafficked in from foreign countries are routinely forced to have sex with strangers because they’re being pimped on Craigslist.”

In an e-mailed statement, craigslist told CNN it had not seen Dart’s complaint but that “craigslist is an extremely unwise choice for those intent on committing crimes, since criminals inevitably leave an electronic trail to themselves that law enforcement officers will follow.”

“On a daily basis, we are being of direct assistance to police departments and federal authorities nationwide,” spokeswoman Susan McTavish said.

NBC Rejects Obama Super Bowl Ad and Sexy PETA Veggie Pitch

January 30, 2009

A popular pro-life video portraying President Obama as an unborn child has been rejected by NBC-TV as an ad during Sunday’s Super Bowl.

By JUlia Duin
The Washington Times

“Imagine Spot 1,” a YouTube video that has amassed more than 700,000 hits since its Jan. 2O premiere on Black Entertainment Television, was submitted earlier this week to NBC by Fidelis, a Chicago-based Catholic organization. Its subsidiary, CatholicVote.org, runs the 30-second spot on its Web site.

Brian Burch, president of Fidelis, said NBC originally responded with a proposal for a package including ads on NBC-owned or operated stations in the country’s top 10 markets plus an additional four cities for a price tag of $1.5 million to $1.8 million. The immensely popular football game is known for the unusual and trendy kinds of ads it attracts.

“We put out the call to our members and large pro-life benefactors who told us they would put up significant dollars to make this happen,” Mr. Burch said. “I was told the ad was approved and then there were a number of attorneys working on it. Then I was told they didn’t want to run political or advocacy ads.”

NBC Says No to PETS Veggie Super Bowl Ad

By GINA DINUNNO
TV GUIDE

PETA loves promoting their animal-friendly campaigns with smokin’ hot, half-naked chicks, but it turns out NBC isn’t a fan. For a proposed Super Bowl commercial touting vegetarianism, the animal rights group went the scandalous route, featuring women in lingerie doing provocative things with veggies. NBC requested PETA cut the woman “rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin” and the one “screwing herself with the broccoli.” PETA decided to keep their ad and not air it — but still get lots of online attention from people wanting to see the ad too hot for NBC. Well played, PETA.

Stimulus Funds Sexual Disease Prevention? Weren’t We Creating Jobs?

January 28, 2009

Democrats may have eliminated provisions on birth control and sod for the National Mall in the “job stimulus” — but buried on page 147 of the bill is stimulation for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

From The Drudge Report

The House Democrats’ bill includes $335 million for sexually transmitted disease education and prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

In the past, the CDC has used STD education funding for programs that many Members of Congress find objectionable and arguably unrelated to a mission of economic stimulus [such as funding events called ‘Booty Call’ and ‘Great Sex’ put on by an organization that received $698,000 in government funds.]

“Whether this funding has merit is not the question; the point is it has no business in an economic plan supposedly focused on job creation,” says a stimulated Hill source.

Drudge:

All rolled up.  President Obama and the Democrats will probably get their economic stimulus package; but anything done this quickly and with so little debate in Congress is often filled with “pork,” waste and other bad deals.  Like fast sex, this legislation might feel good in the short term but….

USA ‘Family Planning’ and ‘Choice,’ Japan Encourages More Children, China: Forced Abortions

January 26, 2009

In the U.S. we accept and even encourage abortions; but when it seems to tricky to say so we call abortion “choice or “family planning.”  Nancy Pelosi even says ‘family palling” money will be in the economic stimulus bill.

China has a “One Child” rule per family.  If you don’t get an abortion after the first one, forced abortions can be available.

In Japan, some companies are encouraging couples to have more sex and more children.

So we different cultures deal with sex and life and death….

Oprah, Britney, China, ‘If U Seek Amy’ and What Next Rod Blagojevich?

January 26, 2009

China says there is porn everywhere and has shut down over 1,000 web sites to show who’s boss.  Britney Spears supporters say her new album “Circus” is all about fun but critics say she is spelling a nasty word for intercourse in the song about Amy.

And Rod Blagojevich is saying his impeachment is not aboout selling the Senate seat once held by Barack Obama and he is pleading his case on TV and everywhere else….

Blago says he thought about naming Oprah to the Senate….

Here’s what we think: China cares nothing for public morality but it does want to totally control all media so that pro-democracy messages and movements are difficult.

Britney is just trying to make money.

Oprah would be a horrible senator as she doesn’t do her homework.  But then, that is where a lot of people go when they don’t do their homework.

And screw Blago….

Britney Spears is back, annoying parent groups with a new song they say is a crude lyrical trick that doesn’t belong on the airwaves.

The song’s title, “If U Seek Amy,” is sung in such a way as to sound like a crass entreaty instead of advice for finding a girl, according to the Parents Television Council.

“There is no misinterpreting the lyrics to this song, and it’s certainly not about a girl named Amy,” council President Tim Winter said of the third single from Spears’ new album, “Circus.”

Officials from Spears’ label, Jive, could not be reached for comment.

China says Internet crackdown to be “long-lasting”

January 23, 2009

If you thought even for a second that China might relax Internet restrictions and move closer to free media and free press, forget about it!

During the same week that China censored President Barack Obama’s inaugural speech, the government said its Internet crackdown would be a long one….

China has closed down 1,250 Web sites in its latest crackdown for what it calls ” online pornography”….

********

BEIJING (Reuters) – China sought Friday to portray its Internet crackdown as a campaign to protect youth from filth and nothing to do with stifling political dissent, with an official promising long-lasting action against “vulgarity.”

China has already detained 41 people as part of the crackdown, but the government’s move was in reality no different from laws in the United States and Europe which also aim to keep children from harmful sites, said Liu Zhengrong, deputy director of the State Council Information Office’s Internet Bureau.

“The purpose of this campaign is very clear,” he told a small group of invited reporters. “It’s aimed at creating a healthy Internet environment for all young people and making the Internet in China safer and more reliable.”

art.hacker1.cnn.jpg

Above: China closely monitors the habits of its 300 million Internet users.  Over 40 people have been detained for disseminating porn on the Internet, and over 3 million “items of online information” have been deleted.

The Internet crackdown has been described by analysts as another step in the Communist Party‘s battle to stifle dissent in a year of sensitive anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the crackdown on the pro-democracy Tiananmen Square protests.

“The Internet remains where the battle for information lies and the fact that the government is devoting so much effort at reining it in, in itself indicates how much of a threat they perceive it to be,” said Nicholas Bequelin of Human Rights Watch.

China polices the Internet intensely, quickly removing any content deemed subversive or overly critical of the Party.

The government has closed over 1,200 websites, including a popular blog site, but with an estimated 3,000 new sites appearing daily, the battle to maintain control of the online world is never-ending.

VULGAR WEBSITES

We fully realize that the crackdown on vulgar websites will be long-lasting, complicated and difficult,” said Liu. “We will not abandon efforts to clean up the Internet environment under any circumstances.”

Zhang-ziyi
China reeled last year with postings and photos of young Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi cavorting on a beach in the Caribbean with her fiancé.

One of the websites closed in the campaign, which began this month, was bullog.cn, a popular site for Chinese bloggers. Some of the bloggers it hosted had been signatories of Charter 08, a manifesto released in December that called for greater civil freedoms and elections in China.

But Li Jiaming, director of the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, said the government did not have a political motive.

The crackdown had “achieved clear results,” with more than 3.3 million pornographic or vulgar items already identified and deleted, Liu said.

Internet pornography and vulgar content seriously threaten the mental and physical health of youth and threaten to damage the healthy development of the Internet in China,” Liu said, adding that more than 35 percent of web surfers in China were under 19.

“I can tell you very candidly, our work does not have anything to do with political content. People are extremely supportive of this campaign.”

China had looked at similar Internet laws in other countries, including in the United States and Britain, and found common ground, he added.

“We discovered a common goal of all these governments is to ensure that Internet users feel safe when they go online.”

China Extends War on Free Speech Hidden by Fight Against Porn into Cell Phones

January 21, 2009

China has extended a crackdown on electronic porn to the country’s mobile phones, after shutting down 1,250 websites because of their explicit content, the official Xinhua agency said Wednesday.

“We will incorporate ‘lewd’ messages spread via mobile phones into the crackdown,” the report quoted a joint notice from the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Culture and five other government offices saying.

China promised last week that the campaign, which was launched in early January, will be no “flash in the pan.”

art.hacker1.cnn.jpg

Over 40 people have been detained for disseminating porn on the Internet, and over 3 million “items of online information” have been deleted, the report said.

Google, Baidu and other major websites have also been given a public dressing down for not being quick enough to wipe out targeted content, and outspoken blogging portals shut down for posting “politically harmful information.”

The Internet crackdown has been described by analysts as another step in the Communist Party‘s battle to stifle dissent in a year of sensitive anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the government’s bloody crackdown on the pro-democracy Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.

Amy Winehouse: Sex Fling Meaningless, “I Want My Blake”

January 19, 2009

Amy Winehouse’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil will not succeed in his effort to divorce the singer, she has claimed.

The former studio runner – still serving a prison sentence for assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice – last week instructed his solicitor to file for divorce from the Back to Black star.

“I can confirm that I have been instructed to commence divorce proceedings on the grounds of Amy’s adultery,” said a statement from Fielder-Civil’s lawyer Henri Bradman.

But according to the Sun newspaper, 25-year-old Winehouse will fight her husband’s attempt to end their marriage.

“I still love my Blake. I won’t let him divorce me,” she is quoted by the tabloid as saying.

However, Winehouse explained recent photographs of her with actor Josh Bowman in the Caribbean resort of St Lucia by saying she still wants to have “some fun” and a “good time”.

“Blake is the male version of me. We’re perfect for each other. I don’t want to go back home to England. I want to wait for Blake here,” she reportedly told the Sun.

“Josh was lovely. But it was a holiday thing. I’ve got my Blake.”

Prostitution Banned During Obama Events, But in Lincoln’s Time….

January 19, 2009

You invite a couple of million of your closest friends to the biggest bash your town has ever thrown. You extend bar hours nearly till dawn. You import thousands of cops to keep the streets safe. You commandeer every bit of paved surface you can think of to accommodate innumerable buses packed with visitors.

And then you plaster the street lamp poles in a central part of the city with big red signs “WARNING” all that “This area has been declared a PROSTITUTION FREE ZONE.”

What’s wrong with this picture?

By Marc Fisher
The Washington Post

Now, maybe I’m not reading this the way your average tourist or Obama supporter would, but to me, this sign–one of a whole bunch D.C. police have posted between 4th and 5th streets NW from Eye to L streets–means that everywhere the signs aren’t, prostitution is just fine and dandy.

In The Lincoln Presidency, House Of Ill Repute Stood on the Mall

By John E. Carey

Millions of Americans are in Washington DC to participate in the events of the New Obama Presidency.

May have enjoyed comparisons to Lincoln, and walked over the site of the finest Washington DC whore house ever.
Mary Ann Hall catered to the nation’s elite in Washington as the proprietor of the capital’s best brothel during the Civil War.

Located just three blocks from the U.S. Capitol on Maryland Avenue on what now is part of the Mall, her house, a three-story structure nearly the size of a city block, included parlors, an elegant dining room and, almost assuredly, the most attractive of the city’s estimated 5,000 “soiled doves.”

Prostitution was not a crime in the 19th century, and any concentration of troops during the Civil War attracted flocks of “camp followers” who were available for a price. Women often would show up after battles and offer their services to the generals as nurses. The “nursing,” however, frequently became an open door to those less honest and caring, and when armies experienced theft, prostitution and other less traditional forms of nursing, generals sometimes rejected offers of female help.

Houses of prostitution were fairly common in America’s larger cities, and Washington had as many as 450 entertainment venues on the “wilder side.” The presence of affluent politicians, lobbyists and the hierarchy of the government departments helped make Washington a man’s home away from home.

Elected representatives in those years did not routinely bring wives and families to Washington. Service in Congress was not necessarily even a full-time job. The city was hot and steamy. Nights could be filled with drinking, smoking, gambling and frolicking with willing companions of the gentler sex, far from the eyes of the electorate at home.

Mary Ann Hall took every opportunity to provide such indulgences. The throngs of men willing and able to pay her comparatively exorbitant rates deserved the best. Imported hats, dresses and perfume enhanced her staff. Magnums of champaign added an air of dignity, gentility and grace. Fine food filled the supper tables. Her real goal as hostess, however, was to supply attractive women.

The fashion of the time was an hourglass shape – an ample bosom and tiny waist – which not all women could achieve without corsets reinforced with steel belts called busks. Busks, champagne corks, fine china and combs to hold spectacular hair creations all have been excavated from the site where Hall’s house once stood. Historians and archaeologists believe the quality of these items shows the elegance Hall brought to her entertainment trade. Several of them, including rusted busks, have been preserved by the Smithsonian Institution.

Hall insisted on certain standards of decorum, and her house, which opened around 1837, flourished until it closed in 1878. She was never raided by police, was not the subject of public disgrace or even controversy and was never discussed in newspapers. Editors in those days believed that what was private should stay private. Unless a public figure disgraced himself so thoroughly that prosecution was in order, private excesses remained unreported.

Rep. Daniel E. Sickles of New York learned the limits the hard way. Rumors abounded in the late 1850s that he maintained close personal relationships with a variety of women. Though tongues wagged, his private pleasures never merited newspaper interest. Then, when he murdered his much-younger wife’s lover, Barton Key, the son of Francis Scott Key, who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner”- detailed accounts of the court proceedings made newspaper sales soar.

Sickles shoots Key in 1859
Sickles shoots Key in 1859; from a newspaper

The 1859 trial and associated juicy details sold newspapers and became for a time the talk of Washington and New York. Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper printed 200,000 copies as the trial opened. Demand forced a second printing of 300,000. (During the Civil War, then-Gen. Sickles’ private indiscretions returned to the realm of private matters. After the war, despite routine and well-documented misbehavior, his private life remained taboo to journalists.)

Mary Ann Hall became a wealthy woman. She died in 1886 and was buried in Congressional Cemetery beneath a carved stone statue of herself.

Ladies’ general

The slang word for prostitute, hooker, is generally thought to have originated during the Civil War. For generations, rumors claimed that Union Gen. “Fighting Joe” Hooker had inspired the nickname by his amorous relationships.

General Joe Hooker

There is, however, a recorded use of the word before the war, according to the Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins. The dictionary’s authors queried historian Bruce Catton, who agreed that the term came into use before the Civil War but that it became popular during the conflict. An area south of Constitution Avenue was known for its extracurricular activities and was referred to as “Hooker’s Division.” A Civil War officer, Charles Francis Adams Jr., referred to Hooker’s headquarters as “as place to which no self-respecting man likes to go, and no decent woman could go – a combination of barroom and brothel.”

Hooker should be remembered, however, for more than his moral laxities. He was wounded at Antietam and fought at Second Bull Run, and Lincoln made him commander of the Army of the Potomac after Ambrose Burnside’s disastrous defeat at Fredericksburg.

The Battle of Chancellorsville began well and ended badly for the 48-year-old West Point graduate, and just days before Gettysburg, Hooker asked to be relieved. The president appointed George Gordon Meade his successor as commander of the Army of the Potomac.

Outrage at Busty Virgin Mary Models: Holy Mother of God!

January 16, 2009

A prominent fashion designer has sparked outrage in Chile by dressing up models like the Virgin Mary — in some cases with ample, near-naked breasts.

The Roman Catholic Church condemned Ricardo Oyarzun’s plans for a show featuring the models, and a conservative group tried unsuccessfully to block it in court.

Oyarzun said he had received telephone threats and had excrement smeared on his doorstep.

“There is no pornography here, there’s no sex, there are no virgins menstruating or feeling each other up,” Oyarzun said ahead of the catwalk show set to be held at a Santiago nightclub later on Thursday. “This is artistic expression.”

He said his designs — which include halos, look as though they come from a nativity scene and include religious icons — were inspired by the Virgin Mary but not intended to represent her.

“We look on with special pain and deplore those acts which seek to tarnish manifestations of sincere love toward the Virgin Mary, which end up striking at the dignity of womankind by presenting her as an object of consumption,” Chile’s Episcopal Conference, which includes Catholic bishops, said in a statement.

The show is more evidence that Chile, heavily influenced by the church for decades, is shaking off its reputation as one of the most socially conservative countries in Latin America.
