What do I tell my legal immigrant family and friends?

March 25, 2009

I was going to stay out of the immigration debate but we are headlong quickly toward a cliff so here goes.

I have many family members and friends that came to the United States legally and went through the system.

Many waited six, seven or more years to become citizens.  All are legal — many with their own businesses and I don’t know one that has become a burden upon the taxpayers.

Most of these people are Asians: Vietnamese-Americans, Chinese-Americans and Korean-Americans.

My wife came here the hard way: after war and communism and prison in Vietnam she fled by boat: facing death by starvation, pirates, rape and other criminal activity.  Add to that the environment: the sun and the sea.  Four people died in her boat.

She came here and waited, and waited and waited to become a citizen.  She learned English and worked at minimum wage jobs.  She now has her own business and is hanging on by a thread due to the bad economy.

She never complains.

She never even complains when we see hundreds of people — daily — that are here illegally and demanding work and money and benefits.

They aren’t learning English and are not awaiting the system: they are waiting for Nancy Pelosi’s revolution.

They are waiting for the “system’ to adapt to them: and with the Speaker of the House telling them that officers sworn to defend the law are un-American — what should I tell my Vietnamese-American family about America, justice and the rule of law?

Obama, Pelosi: Anything to Win

March 19, 2009

Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are all about changing America: and not necessarily the old fashioned way with public debate, wise congressional deliberation, laws and courts.

This is now about anything to win.

President Obama’s “outrage” at AIG paying bonuses is theater of the absurd.  He could care less about $165 million.  He sits atop a several trillion dollar empire in real trouble.  What he wants is to demonize Wall Street, “Big Business” and the leadership of the “old” capitalisim, just as he demonized “big oil.”

By rushing his economic stimulus through congress, and in the confusion making sure bonus money for corporations like AIG was protected, the White House, Treasury and perhaps even the Fed engineered the AIG outrage  in order to overhaul regulations governing American business.

You’ll never convince me otherwise and you’ll never convince me that Chris Dodd or Tim Geithner has the brains or the stones to do this on their own.  Obama and Rahm Emanuel certainly might….

Now the president will go on Jay Leno: the first sitting president to appear on the “Tonight Show” — more blatant blurring of news and entertainment and from whom?  Barack Obama and the National Barack Channel (NBC).

More do anything to win.  We expect him to host SNL soon — to diffuse their comedic cynicism.

And then we have Nancy Pelosi, the third in line to the presidency, virtually telling illegal immigrants to violate the law: that the law is “Un-American.”

Well, here’s more “anything to win” — changing law by illegal acts and shenanigans.

If Nancy wants to make good law; she is in the catbird seat to do so.  The Speaker of the House knows how to make good law and how to defeat those that stand in her way too….

Pelosi made the stimulus bill and Obama has already offered her the health care revolution.  But she’s not satisfied yet: now she’ll rewrite immigration law by not picking up a pen: she’ll use the microphone.

President Pelosi?

March 7, 2009

America has never had a woman President or Vice President but then again America has never had a woman Speaker of the House before either.

And Nancy Pelosi is unlike previous women to seek one of the nation’s top two spots, Geraldine Ferraro and Sarah Palin: Pelosi already has a mega-job that could easily catapault her into the White House.

Pelosi is feared by Republicans and Democrats alike.  Even Barack Obam has deferred to her twice already during his brief presidency.  Obama gave Pelosi and her team the job of crafting the economic stimulus package and now he has said she will spearhead creation of the health care reform measure.

Pelosi has also revised the rules of the House to preserve her clout and control.

So Pelosi is doing much of the heavy lifting in the Obama Administration; arguably more than Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Rahm Emanuel, Timothy Geithner, Hillary Clinton or any of Obama’s many other czars and assistants….

When San Francisco’s Chamber of Commerce-led delegation meets with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during its stimulus-dollarhunting expedition in D.C. next week, members might want to ascertain whether the hometown Democrat is rowing in the same direction as President Obama. Recent media reports suggest not. Pelosi’s “snubbing” of Republicans as she fast-tracked the stimulus package, according to a Newsweek story last week, denied the president some measure of the bipartisan support he sought. “Pelosi was very publicly undercutting the president,” an administration official is quoted as saying. “Obama wants that to stop.”

Pelosi says the story “couldn’t be further from the truth.” “The speaker agrees with him on almost every issue, although there will be disagreements on some things,” Brendan Daly, Pelosi’s communications director, told me. But the story did leave some bruised feelings. “Some of the Obama people said things they shouldn’t be saying,” said another Pelosi supporter.

And the speaker did halt another Obama initiative in its tracks – the establishment of a blue ribbon-style Social Security panel to figure out how to keep the program from going bankrupt. “The speaker thinks a new commission isn’t necessary,” said Daly. “This can be done in Congress.” Pelosi has told House committee chairs to include Social Security reform in federal spending hearings she wants held.

One suspects the necessary changes to Social Security won’t be fast-tracked any time soon.

Obama Was Cheated: House Stimulus a Nancy Pelosi Crime

February 5, 2009

The newly inaugurated President of the United States declared a national crisis.  He wanted an economic stimulus and he wanted it fast.

His mantra was jobs.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was ready with every hunk of junk pork spending that no Congress before had ever seen fit to pass.

She assembled a group of her Democratic staff and Representatives and put together a one-way Democrat spending bill — not a stimulus.

And she totally ignored the president’s pledge for bipartisanship.

House Minority Leader John Boehner and Republicans were completely shut out; their inputs ignored or overruled.

When the House prepared to vote on the stimulus, Boehner expressed “disappointment.” He said it included a “lot of wasteful spending that won’t create jobs.”

“Saying ‘we won’ and excluding Republican input is not the way to start,” Republican Senator John McCain said of the “bipartisanship” within the current stimulus bill.

The Speaker of the House also participated in a conspiracy that resulted in the failure of the stimulus to be properly understood.  It was not even available in the Internet in time to be publically read before the House vote.

Democratic House Member Jim Cooper from Tennessee said, “If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We’re just told how to vote. We’re treated like mushrooms most of the time.”

“We’ll be glad to sit down with the White House any time,” McCain said.  “We’re in a national crisis.”

Thank goodness for the Senators.

Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) said today, “It doesn’t treat the disease; just the symptoms.”

He’s a doctor.

Coburn also said of the stimulus bill, “I don’t think the president has read it.”

Coburn said the stimulus will probably pass “but it won’t work, it won’t be successful.”

Now some 43% of the voters say the stimulus is wrong; and only 37% of those polled like it.

At this point McCain says,  “no bill is better than this bill.”
.
He and other Republicans have an alternative to the House stimulus that they have already discussed with President Obama.

We pray President Obama has the good sense to work with McCain and others to make an acceptable stimulus — something he has always pledged to do.

And we hope President Obama has learned a lesson about Nancy Pelosi and her House Democrats.
