Obasm: “It took us a couple of days,” Yet FDR Got Pearl Harbor Right and Fast

March 25, 2009

When someone is on top of the facts; he doesn’t need a teleprompter.

And when a person has deeply seated values and ideals, he doesn’t need to wait to see what the polls will say.

Ed Henry should get an award for eliciting the truth from the president last night about his slow response to the AIG bonus caper.

“It took us a couple of days because I like to know what I’m talking about before I speak,” the president said.

Maybe he wants to know what to think.

What Obama left out is this: we at the White House also like to take a poll, write crafty remarks and get them into the teleprompter, before we say anything.

FDR reponded faster and better to Pearl Harbor.  He was on top of the facts and at the top of his game.  And he got it right.

I’m calling this Ed Henry response an “Obasm” as in Barack Obama blurting out the truth.

Obama didn’t know what to say about the AIG bonuses.  The stimulus bill allowed them and Geithner, Bernanke and their boys knew about them for months maybe.

Once publically disclosed, the president needed two days to decide what to say.  Then he faked “outrage.”  Then the House voted a 90% confiscatory tax on the bonuses and the president changed course: maybe he was too hasty after two days because he still got it wrong.

I’ll take FDR or Lincoln.  Even without the teleprompter and the polls they knew what they were doing and we knew what to expect.

The reason we want impromptu appearances and remarks by the President of the United States, any president (and all other elected officials) is this: voters need to know how their elected officials really think — and what they really think.

We wants our elected officals off the telepromter and away from the polling data: we want them to speak from the heart and mean it.

I’m not sure we’ve ever seen Barack Obama speak from the heart.  Everything is scripted.  When his pastor raised eyebrows: he lied about the relationship.  Now he has three pastors; not because he believes all three but because, I think, he can’t afford the nighmare scenario that one might not meet with public approval….

When teased about his telepromter: this president got a bigger one……

Telepromter President Goes Jumbotron!

March 25, 2009

Teased about his over relieance on the teleprompter, President Obama decided last night to use a jumbotron in only his second White House press conference.

This is like listening to the sight impaired read aloud; but we wouldn’t want to offend the sight impaired.

Eventually, in Amerian politics, even the slickest, most packaged guy will get unwrapped.

This is it.

Too bad the media assited in the packaging of the messiah before the election: now we have a president losing the confidence of the American people in a time of crisis.

What is worse is this: he seems to be losing his own confidence: his own sense of self and reality.

Scripted.  Careful.  Tentative.  False.  Packaged.

That’s “No Drama” Obama these days after an ad lib gone bad on Leno and inappropriate laughter on “60 minutes.”

Caution: not confidence.  In body lanuage and words the president is a giant blinking caution light.

“Full recovery is still months away,” I heard a news reader say. “The president tried to rally the nation.”

Obviously: this is a bowler that has never been to a rally.

What kind of politician brings a teleprompter to a news conference?

A careful one.

President Barack Obama took no chances in his second prime-time news conference, reading a prepared statement in which he took both sides of the AIG bonus brouhaha and asked an anxious nation for its patience.

“There are no quick fixes,” he said, “and there are no silver bullets.”

It’s an interesting dichotomy: Obama came before the nation to sell one of the most expensive and politically risky agendas ever offered by a U.S. president, but his language was heavy with caution. A hard-willed plan given a soft sell.

Associated Press

Served up opportunities to lead with his heart, Obama was cerebral. Cool and calming in a time of white-hot public anger.

“You know, there was a lot of outrage and finger-pointing last week, and much of it is understandable,” Obama said of the bonus issue in his opening remarks. “I’m as angry as anybody about those bonuses that went to some of the very same individuals who brought our financial system to its knees.”

“Bankers and executives on Wall Street need to realize that enriching themselves on the taxpayers’ dime is inexcusable, that the days of outsized rewards and reckless speculation that puts us all at risk have to be over,” the president told reporters and the nation.

But he didn’t look angry. Nor did he sound much like a pitchfork-wielding populist.

“At the same time, the rest of us can’t afford to demonize every investor or entrepreneur who seeks to make a profit. That drive is what has always fueled our prosperity, and it is what will ultimately get these banks lending and our economy moving once more,” he said.

It was a carefully modulated statement, and Obama—relying on a familiar crutch—read it off a flat-screen monitor perched at the back of the East Room.

The teleprompter was no help during the question-and-answer session (reporters don’t signal their intentions), but Obama was no less careful during that give and take.

Asked why people should trust government with the regulatory authority to take over failing financial companies such as troubled insurer American International Group Inc., Obama passed on the chance to demonize Washington.

“Keep in mind, it is precisely because of the lack of this authority that the AIG situation has gotten worse,” Obama said. He then gave a scholarly explanation of how the proposal would work.

Pressed again, Obama cited the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s handling of the IndyMac Bank as an example of government properly using its authority.

The government did something right? That’s news to most Americans.

Still, it’s hard to criticize Obama’s communication skills or tactics. Polls show that while the public has turned against Washington and Wall Street, the president’s ratings remain steady.

He has aggressively delivered his cautious message—through town halls, talk shows, travel and, yes, prime-time news conferences. His message: Stick with me and my $3.6 trillion budget.

“This is a big ocean liner, it’s not a speedboat. It doesn’t turn around immediately,” he said Tuesday night. “But we’re in a better, better place because of the decisions that we made.”

Calm. Cool. Careful.

One of the few times he summoned raw emotion came after a reporter demanded to know why it took him so long to express outrage over the AIG executive bonuses.

“It took a couple of days because I like to know what I’m talking about before I speak.”

Even better, he likes to have it up on the teleprompter.

Obama Once Ruled the Media: Now He Wants To Reach You With Less Of Them

March 24, 2009

Being president is tough: even if most people think you are the guy with more media friends and less media criticism and scrutiny than any man before you.

So after two years of cmpaigning filled with media fawning, the Obamagasm media now cannot even please the Messiah a little bit.

He wants to talk directly to the voters.

Through a teleprompter of course.

And he wants to talk only to the media and the voters of his choosing: like Black and Latino media.

He is everybody’s president but he can no longer abide everyman’s media.

This at a time of unprecedented newspaper closings and the loss of investigative journalists….

And the media he’ll choose is the direct appeal: just like the video that just went to Iran.  The Internet and talking directly to the people.

Help from the likes of Jay Leno will be O.K. and maybe some time on “60 Minutes” is good, so long as the Messiah can laugh when he wants.

Even Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesperson seems to be tired (already?) of so many thorney issues and questions now that the media isn’t still completely dead.

The media is s still a fawning puppy in Obama’s lap: but he realizes now the puppy has the ability to lay a tur * key anytime and anywhere it wants….

Joe Biden even said on Saturday at the Gridiron dinner: there is still a place for newspapers, especially if you have to housebreak a puppy….

From Politico
At a time when his Washington honeymoon is turning into a hazing, President Barack Obama and his team are launched on a strategy to sail above the traditional White House press corps by reaching out to liberal commentators, local reporters and ethnic media.

The highest-profile moments in the new approach have been well-noted, such as the president giving an interview to progressive radio host Ed Schultz and Obama calling on a reporter from the liberal-leaning Huffington Post at his first news conference.

But those moves are only part of a much larger strategy aimed at communicating directly with audiences the White House believes are more sympathetic to the president’s agenda — and one in which much of the work is being done by Obama’s top advisers.

On the day Obama released his ambitious spending plan, the administration put White House budget director Peter Orszag on a conference call with liberal-leaning writers. Senior administration aides have followed up by promoting the budget to local radio talk shows during morning drive time.

Jared Bernstein, Vice President Joe Biden’s economic adviser and a favorite of the labor-liberal wing of the Democratic Party, also held a conference call with friendly reporters.

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has done conference calls with black and Hispanic media outlets.

Teleprompter White House: Packaged People, Messages

March 23, 2009

Joe “Gimme a f&*^%$ing break” Biden isn’t packaged.  His off hand comments are legendary.

But the Obama gang of advisors wants him to learn, to grow and get with the f&^*%$#ing telepromter.

Without it, Biden is dangerous.  Even when talking about 7-11.

Even the president proved dangerous this last weekend.  Within about 48 hours he was not very inspiring in two interviews without the teleprompter, one with Jay Leno and one on “60 Minutes.”

But who would have had the forethought to tell this great communicator (1) Jokes about the Special Olympics can go south fast; and (2) Laughing about the economy and people losing their jobs, savings and lunch money isn’t funny.

Then there is Tiny Tim Geithner: a media nightmare.

Today Geithner pulled off a successful “media event.”  The White House did not allow live pictures!

This is the most managed and packaged administration yet….

By Howard Kurtz
From CNN:

The venues could hardly be more different: Jay Leno’s couch and Steve Kroft’s hot seat.

The president, trying to get off the defensive during AIG Outrage Week, is on a certified media blitz. That’s why he played the Leno card, risking criticism that he shouldn’t be making jokes in Burbank while the economy is crumbling. That’s why he handicapped the NCAA playoff brackets on ESPN, risking criticism that he shouldn’t be worried about college hoops while the banking system remains in crisis.

That hot seat, figuratively speaking, was in the Oval Office, where the “60 Minutes” correspondent interviewed the president Friday evening.

“I think we asked him a lot of hard questions,” Kroft told me Sunday on “Reliable Sources.” “But I have to say that I found him probably more relaxed this week than at any other time that I had interviewed him.”

I asked whether he felt the need to be more polite with an incumbent president than a mere White House wannabe.

“I think that interviews with presidents are different than almost anything else,” Kroft said. “They’re sort of the last bastion of civility … particularly when you’re in the Oval Office. You’re not supposed to wag your finger at him, and you’re not supposed to get — it’s supposed to be civil. And so you always try and keep that in mind.”

Biden: Give Obama a F*&^%$#ing Break

March 22, 2009

“Axelrod really wanted me to do this on teleprompter — but I told him I’m much better when I wing it. … I know these evenings run long, so I’m going to be brief. Talk about the audacity of hope. … President Obama does send his greetings, though. He can’t be here tonight — because he’s busy getting ready for Easter. (Whisper) He thinks it’s about him. …”

That was Joe Biden last night at the Gridiron Dinner:
http://www.politico.com/playbook/

Here’s what we wrote a couple of weeks ago about letting Biden fill in for the President at the Gridiron:

Did you lose your job?  Your house?  Is your IRA worthless?  Did Bernie the Bandito rob you of your retirement?

My wife and I can’t go on “spring break” because we have no money for that kind of thing any more: but President Barack Obama will leave Washington DC before long because he now needs and undoubtedly deserves a spring break with Michelle and his kids.  And in doing that, Obama will be the first president since Grover Cleveland not to attend the first Gridiron Club Dinner of his presidency.

That’s not a big loss since Joe Biden has agreed to step in and he is always a hoot with his ad lib remarks: like you can always find Indians and Pakistanis working in 7-11….

At an event at Union Station today where Vice President Joe Biden was heralding the $1.3 billion in investments in rebuilding train stations and passenger rails, a microphone picked up one of the former senator’s myriad Senate colleagues addressing him, formally, as “Mr. Vice President.”

That met with Vice President Biden’s standard reply.

“Gimme a f*&$#ing break,” he said, apparently unaware that the microphone was on.

Obama Cannot Perform Without Teleprompter (Biden Bad With or Without…)

March 5, 2009

Many have noticed that Barack Obama just isn’t himself without his teleprompter.  In fact, without his favorite speech aid, the next Abraham Lincoln sounds a lot like, well, Jimmy Carter.

Joe Biden is a confused, inanne and inept public speaker even with his teleprompter.  Today he gave the major address at an AFL-CIO event and cameras and other recording devices were banned.

We thought it interesting to note that Rush Limbaugh never uses a teleprompter at all….

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/02/24/ma
ny-hours-before-he-had-uttered-a-word/

******

President Barack Obama doesn’t go anywhere without his TelePrompter.

The textbook-sized panes of glass holding the president’s prepared remarks follow him wherever he speaks.

Resting on top of a tall, narrow pole, they flank his podium during speeches in the White House’s stately parlors. They stood next to him on the floor of a manufacturing plant in Indiana as he pitched his economic stimulus plan. They traveled to the Department of Transportation this week and were in the Capitol Rotunda last month when he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln in six-minute prepared remarks.

Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is unusual — not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events, large and small.

After the teleprompter malfunctioned a few times last summer and Obama delivered some less-than-soaring speeches, reports surfaced that he was training to wean himself off of the device while on vacation in Hawaii. But no such luck.

Transparency? Biden Appears At Union Event But Cameras Not Allowed

March 5, 2009

Gaffe-prone Vice President of the United States Joe Biden appeared before a union meeting today that did not permit the prying eyes of media cameras and microphones.

The Veep, who is well known for his ramblings and stupid remarks, has been coached repeatedly to stay on message and to adhere rigorously to prepared remarks as they scroll across the telepromter.  Now maybe he can escape a public event without putting his foot in his mouth by simply not allowing the media to record his outings.

Vice President Joe Biden addressed the nation’s largest union groups today as Congress is considering the heavily union-supported Employee Free Choice Act.

The AFL-CIO Executive Council meeting and newly appointed Labor Secretary Hilda Solis are both in Miami this week drumming up support for the bill that would give workers the option of unionizing by getting a majority of the workers to sign cards or a petition instead of holding secret ballot elections.

Biden addressed union members Thursday morning before heading to the Miami Intermodal Center, a transportation project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Know why nobody listens to Joe Biden?  Because he says stupid stuff, or isn’t recorded at all and certainly doesn’t have Obama’s ear….

Nobody listens to Joe Biden because he isn’t worth hearing….

Toby Hardin of the Telegraph in London wrote about an Obama news conference on February 10:

As reporters started giggling, Obama came close to conceding that Biden was indeed a joke. “You know, I don’t remember exactly what Joe was referring to, not surprisingly.”

From Fox News:

Vice President Joe Biden’s office said Thursday it is honoring the wishes of the union to not have the press attend, which the AFL-CIO acknowledged after previously telling FOX News it was the vice president’s decision….

So much for transparency, but who’s messing with Joe?

Cameras have been banned from Vice President Biden’s address to AFL-CIO leaders in Miami Thursday.

The vice president’s office said Thursday it is honoring the wishes of the union to have press cameras barred.

“Traditionally, the AFL-CIO Executive Council meetings are closed press. Each of its sessions this week have been closed press,” spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said in a statement.

The AFL-CIO acknowledged Thursday that it was its choice to ban cameras after telling FOX News a day earlier it was the vice president’s decision. Alexander said the veep tried to change the rule but was denied.

“As part of its unprecedented commitment to transparency, Vice President Biden’s office asked that a change to the policy be made so that a pool of print reporters would be allowed to cover the speech and a full transcript of the vice president’s remarks will be sent out this afternoon.”

Obama’s Pyrrhic Victory: Hope, Promise, Bipartisanship Lost

February 7, 2009

What do you say to disillusioned people?

“No Drama Obama” was a phoney.  The man with hope, an MLK like dreamy quality, and a kinship for Abraham Lincoln quickly offered us catastrophe.

He created catastrophe.  Manufactured it.  And Thurday night at a Spa, in a room reserved for Democrats only, he blamed it all on Republicans, during an off the telepromter gloat that will haunt him forever.

What do you say to people that gave their trust and hope; who believed the message, just a few weeks ago,  was honest?

What do you tell people who thought their vote might help heal America and bring this Great Nation to a better place, when they are already expressing dismay?

Gail Collins wrote in the New York Times about Daschle’s loss and the stimulus.

“I dropped out of school for a semester to campaign for Barack Obama. And now I’m asking myself whether I spent four months living with my aunt and going door to door in Dayton, Ohio, just so we could have a stimulus plan written by a bunch of moderate Republicans and conservative Democrats in the Senate,” Ms. Collins wrote.

Honesty, credibility, believebility, faith and hope make small presidents great.

Barack Obama was never small.  But he grew to epic, even Messianic proportions fueled by adoring crowds and a fawning media.

Now maybe he has crashed to earth.

Because he sure squandered a lot of  “political capital.”
