Rep. Waters Demands Obama Clarify AIG Bonus Provision

March 21, 2009

Waters’ comments were the strongest criticism yet from a Democrat over the controversy that continues to grow.

Fox News

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., called on President Obama on Friday to explain what happened when a provision was added to his economic stimulus bill last month that allowed AIG employees to receive $165 million in bonuses.

Waters’ comments were the strongest criticism yet from a Democrat over a controversy that continues to grow.

Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn, confessed Wednesday to adding language to a spending cap in the stimulus bill that specifically excluded executive bonuses agreed to before the bill’s passage. But he added that Treasury officials forced him to make the change to protect the government from potential lawsuits.

It was a reversal from Dodd’s position a day earlier, when he strongly denied he had anything to do with adding the provision.

“They’ve got some explaining to do,” Waters told Joe Scarborough on his WABC radio show Friday morning. “And I think the president is going to have to clarify to the American public what took place between Treasury and Mr. Dodd.

“Obviously, there appears to be some sort of an agreement that they would protect AIG from having to give those bonuses. I don’t know who said what and when,” she added. “Chris Dodd said he wrote the language but that he was pressured practically by Treasury. Maybe the president is not up to speed on what is going on, but I think it is going to have to be clarified.”

The provision added to the stimulus bill was a broad measure that applied to all companies receiving bailout money, not just AIG, though the AIG bonuses in particular have caused outrage in Washington and around the country after the insurance giant received more than $170 billion in federal aid.

The U.S. government now has an 80 percent stake in the company, which was hit hard by the downturn in the housing sector and by the failure of complex securities based on risky mortgages.

Geithner, Obama Under Fire From Dem Maxine Waters

March 20, 2009

California’s Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters says Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner knew or certainly should have known about the Treasury’s approved bonuses for AIG employees.

She says President Obama must not have heard the full story on what Geithner knew and when he knew it.

Ms Waters was interviewed by Fox News.

The far left and liberal Waters has always been seen as a strong supporter of Barack Obama.

Her criticism of Obama Treasury Secretary may mean that other Democrats are tiring of Geithner and perhaps the president will be moved to replace him if enough Democrats speak out…..

Waters herself has been under fire.

Rep. Maxine Waters’ reelection campaign lent $25,000 last August to a nonprofit run by the California Democrat’s daughter, according to campaign finance records. The funds were used to underwrite the costs of events at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, a campaign official said.

Waters herself serves on the board of the nonprofit group African-American Committee 2000 and Beyond, the lawmaker’s financial disclosure filings show.

Sidney Williams, the congresswoman’s husband, has also been a director of the nonprofit, according to recent tax filings for the group.

Obama Tells “Turbo Tax” Geithner To Get Back AIG Bonus Money; Dumb and Dumber

March 16, 2009

It had to happen.  Turbo Tax Geithner, who did break a few laws by not correctly figuring and paying his taxes, has been told by President Brack Obama to round up the usual suspects at AIG and get back those huge bonuses you’ve probably heard about.

The amount of “bonus” money, about $163 million, is less than 1/2 of 1% of the bailout AIG got….

And the bonuses are being paid as part of legally binding contracts.

AIG Bonus Flap: Lawsuit to Get Back $165 M Could Cost $300 M or More

So now the President of the United States is voiding those contracts and telling his Treasury Secretary to make it so?

I don’t think so.

Once the government of the United States started to get involved in running big business it jumed on to the slippery slope with a gusto.

When my wife, who lived through the communist takeover in Vietnam, heard President Obama say the U.S. taxpayers should ignore legal contracts and not pay the AIG bonuses, she flew into a rage and said, “This is how it starts.  This is how the state sweeps away everything involved in legal free enterprise.”

GO OBAMA!  But where to?

This isn’t America anymore.  This is communism, socialism or dumb and dumber.
.
Noting that AIG has “received substantial sums” of federal aid from the federal government, Obama said he has asked Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner “to use that leverage and pursue every legal avenue to block these bonuses and make the American taxpayers whole.”

Said Obama: “All across the country, there are people who work hard and meet their responsibilities every day, without the benefit of government bailouts or multimillion-dollar bonuses. And all they ask is that everyone, from Main Street to Wall Street to Washington, play by the same rules.”

“This isn’t just a matter of dollars and cents,” he added. “It’s about our fundamental values.”

Well, it might be about our fundamental values but it is also about fundamental laws: and there will have to be plenty of proof that laws were broken.

Throwing money around is a problem for the federal government….

The guys that should have thier pay withheld are Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd, the Congressional oversight,  and a whole slew of federal oversight guys that got completely outsmarted by the Wall Street crowd, Bernie Madoff and others.  If Bernie’s sons hadn’t turned him in he might have fled to Aruba or somewhere because the feds would never have untagled the mess — and they might not still now that he’s not compelled to talk.

If Barack wants so much to safeguard our dollars in the Treasury he should never have made Geitner Treasury Secretary, he should never have allowed Pelosi to write the stimulus, and he should take away her air fleet and get the healthcare bill planning off her desk until we get the economy back in order.

And nobody in the federal government has the smarts to run big company like AIG.  It is just loonacy to think so.

If the government was so smart they should not have bailed out AIG without knowing they had a legal obligation to pay those bonuses as an “account payable.”

I know the left will blame all this on George Bush.  This is not about where we caught the disease: this is about finding the cure and fast before we are ruined.

Our Federal spending of $1 billion every hour in Obama’s first 50 days is the biggest corruption ever put upon the American taxpayer by far….dwarfing the wrangdoing even of the best elected crooks like Charlie Rangel (or is it Wrangel?) Maxine Waters and others (who are mostly small time boobs)….

Last I checked, the Congress passed the TARP and AIG wound up with something like $170 billion for itself and the others that bought their bad deals.  If the Congress throws money around they sure as hell have to take strong regulatory action….You make sure bonuses are not paid up front, not after they are paid…or you just let the company like AIG fail…

Accountability sucks.  But since many of our elected officials have no clue about true accountability; they could never see a company like AIG for the mess that it became….so we bailed them out.  They were too big to fail.

Psst: Barack.  Spend more time with the U.S. military where there is accountability and nobody is too big to fail. Barney Frank wouldn’t last 24 hours living by those rules…..So how can he be Mister Oversight?

And who among Barack Obama, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and Geithner have ever been involved in a big mega-business like AIG?  The community organizer?  These guys don’t have the stones for this….Or the brains….They should have never given away billions.  Now they have to try to get it back.  This is a national disgrace.  No wonder China is worried…..

If every American voter hasn’t realized it by now here’s a clue: The Chinese, Russians, Taliban and others have taken their measure of Barack Obama already.  You should too.

International relations is tied directly to how the American government performs at home. Others measure the U.S. president: that’s why our embassy in Tehran was overrun in the Carter Administration.

Welcome Back Carter…..

Culture of Corruption: Many Americans Losing Trust in Government?

March 13, 2009

“Go, Mazine (sic) and Nancy. Who listens to professional character assassins such as Malkin? Isn’t Malkin a modern deriviative of Maulkin, one of Macbeth’s witch’s evil associates? Seems like something evil reeks everytime I click on one of these weird missives.”

That according to John Welsh, one of my readers.

We seem to have becme a nation that says its OK to respond to truth with personal attacks and character assassination.

We are too quick to holler racism when the news is color-blind and Barack promised a post-racial world.

We have come to accept lies, corruption and those that break the law.  If you do evil: come back in a few weeks and we’ll forgive.

Bernie Madoff might be the exception….

When Rep. Barney Frank was looking to aid a Boston-based lender last fall, the Massachusetts Democrat urged Maxine Waters, a colleague on the House Financial Services Committee, to “stay out of it,” he says.

The reason: Ms. Waters, a longtime congresswoman from California, had close ties to the minority-owned institution, OneUnited Bank.

Ms. Waters and her husband have both held financial stakes in the bank. Until recently, her husband was a director. At the same time, Ms. Waters has publicly boosted OneUnited’s executives and criticized its government regulators during congressional hearings. Last fall, she helped secure the bank a meeting with Treasury officials.

Here’s another case of splitting the truth….

Candidate For Detroit Mayor a Little Slick With The Truth

Detroit mayoral candidate Dave Bing’s education credentials have come into question, with Syracuse University saying he received his bachelor’s almost three decades after Bing claims he did and an acknowledgment from the candidate’s spokesman that his assertion of having a master’s degree is false.

The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday that Bing has embellished his Syracuse credentials in biographical material. The claim of having a master’s degree in business administration is made on a video directed at pro players preparing for life after basketball.

Syracuse spokesman Kevin Morrow told the newspaper that Bing, who went on to a basketball Hall of Fame career with the Detroit Pistons, wasn’t awarded an undergraduate degree in economics until 1995, after he completed additional courses. Bing has claimed repeatedly he completed college in 1966.

Bing spokesman Cliff Russell told the newspaper the discrepancies are the result of misunderstandings……
